Seven-year-old William Evans, who had developmental disabilities, was found dead on August 6 inside a home on Madison Road in Cincinnati’s Oakley neighborhood. His mother, 38-year-old Kaitlin Evans, and roommates Nessa Keaney, 23, and Kirby Rankin, 33, have been charged with murder and child endangerment. Police testified that William appeared to have suffered prolonged physical abuse, including blunt-force injuries, burns, and alleged periods of being held underwater, and said he was found duct-taped and placed inside a closet. All three defendants pleaded not guilty and are being held on $1.1 million bonds.
Evans’ attorney argues that another defendant caused William’s death and that prosecutors’ case against Evans centers on an alleged failure to intervene. Prosecutors are now preparing to present the case to a grand jury.
