Designers Carla and Bruno, the talented couple behind Hum Gallery & Studio, completely transformed their standard T-shaped apartment with a unique blend of hotel aesthetics and simplicity, using a mix of second hand furniture and natural materials. Key to the overall design was taking advantage of the apartment’s natural light and views overlooking the courtyard. The biggest change to the floorplan was opening the bathroom up into the bedroom, incorporating a large bathtub, vanity and shower into the space. They also removed the original L-shaped corner kitchen and extended it along the full length of the wall, where it forms part of the open plan living and dining space. The area is centred around a custom made dining table and pendant light, with a unique mirror based vintage sofa tucked into a small cosy nook. With the upgrade of this 1901 apartment, Carla and Bruno have created the perfect canvas to feature all of the objects that they have collected over time.

Faced with the challenge of an enclosed 70’s layout with several unalterable features, including low ceilings and south-facing living spaces, architect Benjamin Chan of Sam Crawford Architects breathed new life into his 42sqm Sydney apartment creating a tranquil open plan space better suited for contemporary living. Soft curves and white minimalistic surfaces were used to brighten the living areas and gently transition between spaces. The new combined kitchen and dining room feature cheerful pops of pastel blue-green laminate and terrazzo, echoed in the narrow corridor entrance for a continuous feel. A seamless piece of joinery in the bedroom provides ample storage and conceals the bathroom entrance, revealing a laundry area bathed in bright yellow laminate; a playful contrast to the rest of the apartment.

Originally a dark share house with no common spaces, this 18th-century Parisian apartment was completely transformed by architect Taïna Pichon of Meraki Architecture to maximise both space and light. Knocking down all the internal walls and completely rearranging the floorplan, Pichon created a new bathroom, kitchen, and comfortable living room. The strategic use of glass panels between the dining room and bedroom allows the entire apartment to be flooded with natural light from the living room’s large windows. The client’s cherished record collection holds focus in the living room, as well as a muted orange terracotta-coloured feature wall in the bedroom, adding depth to the apartment. Pichon’s commitment to simplicity and to using only a few natural materials has created a neutral, flexible space with vintage touches that add personality throughout.

Drawn to the features of late 19th-century Barcelona modernist architecture in the apartment, architect and owner Carlota Siverio preserved elements such as the door, tiles and windows whilst adding modern touches that complement the overall design. By removing the coverings of the living room walls and stripping the ceiling, Siverio revealed exposed brickwork walls and a gorgeous structural vault ceiling, reminiscent of the period. A variety of colourful mosaic tiles were either restored or authentically re-created when too damaged. White melamine floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets concealing functional elements run throughout the apartment and seamlessly blend into the wall, allowing the heritage elements to be focal points. At the end of the apartment, the sunroom features era-appropriate terracotta 'rasilla' tiles and reconstructed windows that now open fully providing an outdoor extension of the living space.

Home to a hobby ceramist with a growing vintage furniture collection, the vibrant Koka Studio was designed by architects Kalina and Robert Juchnevic of blok585m2, for Kalina’s sister, Katarzyna. Key elements of post war apartment renovation included opening up the dark and segmented floor plan and introducing era-appropriate materials such as terrazzo tiling and herringbone parquet flooring. The hero of the new open plan living space is the full size kitchen characterised by a combination of oak veneer and pink cabinets, Katarzyna’s favourite colour. A round dining table sourced at a local flea market features three original Bruno Rey chairs upcycled by Katarzyna herself and painted a bright green that mimics the green flecks of the terrazzo tiles. A striking openwork wire structure inspired by Alexander Calder’s mobiles separates the entrance from the living room whilst still allowing light from the double balcony doors to pass through.

Furniture/Interior/Product Designer Nina Tolstrup founded StudioMama in 2000 with partner Jack Mama, and over the past 20 years they’ve championed repurposing, repairing and upcycling with a playful and accessible approach to design. They’ve explored the potential for small footprint living in their 13m2 Cab office conversion, and the 40sqm London Townhouse, filling both with bursts of colour and upcycled furniture like their Re-Imagined chairs. Nina and Jack have created collections of animal sculpture from timber offcuts, chairs and lamps from pallets and even designed sustainable, transforming kitchen spaces for Ottolenghi.

Tucked away in one of Bangkok’s most upscale neighbourhoods, the tranquil Japandi-style Room Langsuan is a sleek and neutral space that accentuates the owner’s collection of designer artworks and furniture. Inspired by minimalist warehouse interiors, OPH Architects’s Pilin Hongwittayakorn used a simple combination of a crisp white palette and light blockboard, an engineered plywood, throughout. A custom joinery piece doubles as a TV cabinet and shoe storage at the entrance, while matte white laminate unifies the entrance, kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets. Blockboard walls and ceilings zone out the Japanese-inspired elevated sleeping platform in the bedroom, which leads into the monochromatic black bathroom offering a dramatic contrast to the rest of the apartment.

Originally part of a larger commercial space that was subdivided into smaller residential areas, OCRE Arquitetura transformed an open plan empty shell into a cosy, comfortable urban studio with an integrated living, sleeping, and dining area. Striking forest-green doors and a slatted green panel mask a full-length wardrobe and a retractable bed, revealing extra storage space and a small reading bench when extended. Custom joinery separates the compact kitchen from the living space, while a built-in plywood desk and overhead shelf visually unify and lengthen the apartment. Complementing the colourful green walls are reddish-orange cabinetry in the bathroom, adding pops of colour amongst the minimalist wooden and grey palette. By efficiently maximising space, the original open layout has been transformed into an intimate respite in the middle of vibrant Southern Brazil.

Home to architect Jean Malo Le-Clerc of JMLC studio, this 1970’s inspired apartment located a stone’s throw from the Moulin Rouge pays homage to the original apartment, integrating materials and colours reminiscent of the 70’s. Super Local, The Designers Transforming Waste Around the World - Wonderful Waste

NEVER TOO SMALL 2023-07-20 | Dutch Designers Pim & Luc have devoted themselves to reducing waste and creating sustainable products hand in hand with local communities. As Super Local they’ve designed ways to stop the burning of plastic in the Himalaya and recycle it at 8000 meters up, turning tourist generated waste glass trapped on Zanzibar into sustainable furniture and concrete, and built hospital playgrounds out of scrap metal and old cars. They spend months to years in developing regions around the world working as partners with locals to reduce and repurpose waste, and directly benefit their community. They see waste as a resource, both something that can be reused and reduced through design that looks beyond the consumers of the top 10%.

Set high up on a hill on a rural estate east of the Brasília city centre, this small family retreat designed by Matheus Carvalho from Coplanar Arquitetura draws inspiration from traditional Brazilian farmhouses. Originally dark and disconnected from the outside world, Carvalho opened up the house bringing in natural light and airflow. Adding a series of indoor/outdoor courtyards and creating an interconnected central social core that combines the kitchen, living room and a newly extended porch. Striking accents painted in the shade Bleu de France frame the white interior, minimally decorated with rustic wooden shades of traditional and locally sourced furniture. Throughout the home, nature and traditional design are masterfully integrated into a contemporary design that provides a sense of togetherness.

Within the tranquil mountains of Taipei's Wenshan District lies a light-filled space completely reimagined by interior designer Anny Hong of AODA Interior Design. Inspired by a minimalistic Japanese lifestyle and materials, light wood and rattan elements add a delicate touch to the navy blue accented apartment. A terrazzo kitchen island divides the kitchen from the living area while providing ample storage for appliances. A large moveable desk and an expandable coffee table can be easily adjusted to suit the homeowner's needs. A subtle wooden grill sliding door opens up into a walk-in wardrobe that cleverly acts as the base for the loft-style bedroom, accessed via a minimalist iron staircase. Sleek raw concrete flooring, curved walls, and raised ceilings create a sense of spaciousness within the apartment’s small footprint.

With its striking coral exterior, sky bridges and views from all four sides, Architect Ben Ellul's apartment in the heritage listed Caringal Flats is a unique part of the suburban Melbourne skyline. Where possible Ben retained and restored all the apartment’s heritage details, maintaining white and textured surfaces but adding a series of sleek black contemporary joinery throughout. Inspired by the apartment's views and abundance of natural light, Ben removed the internal walls originally closing off the bedroom, kitchen and entryway, adding a freestanding double sided storage unit that divides the bedroom from the living room. The bathroom and laundry are cleverly concealed by a series of doors leading to the bedroom and low custom made furniture throughout maximises the apartment’s functionality and access to views. A thoughtfully designed space that preserves the apartment’s aesthetic appeal, Ben’s home is functional first and foremost with a beautiful minimalist touch.

Combining an existing bedroom into a new, open plan living/dining/kitchen area and converting the home's existing kitchen into a kids room. This redesign gave them the opportunity to showcase the building's original 1950’s rough concrete walls in the kitchen and master bedroom; as well as align each room's window with the door; maximising light flow throughout the apartment. Low profile cabinetry and appliances are a subtle addition throughout the home, drawing attention to the home's breathtaking views of the Saône River and the French Alps and the couple's handpicked artwork and display pieces.

Inspired by the calm and peaceful atmosphere of traditional Japanese Ryokans, this central Bangkok apartment has been transformed into a flexible city escape by interior designer Mae Prachasilcha. The main living area seamlessly integrates a study corner, a convertible coffee table/dining table, and a custom-designed 3-seater modular sofa that can be cleverly separated with very strategically incorporated sliding Japanese shoji doors. Divided from the living area by these doors, a wooden box-like platform with four tatami mats serves as a second living room or a cosy tea room during the day and effortlessly transitions into a sleeping area at night. The area can be closed off by using the sliding panels, offering privacy and keeping the room cool at night. This multifunctional approach adds softness and functionality to the space while still allowing light to filter throughout the home.

Located in a small peaceful town one hour south of Kyoto, the single story House in Heguri is a simple, minimalist home for a family of 5. When opened the doors reveal a house clad in galvanised steel with plenty of access to the outdoors, including a covered porch area at the entrance used by the family as a year-round outdoor living space. The central living and dining area are raised on a wooden platform and connect to the kitchen via a large, cleverly designed kitchen island/ dining table with different seating heights on either side. A series of internal sliding doors branch off the central living space to the home’s two bedrooms and utility zone, which includes a separate toilet, bathroom and large laundry.

This theme continues in the bedroom, where a wall of seamless white panelling with hidden handles houses ample storage and wardrobe space. A cleverly placed mirror in the corner of the bedroom gives the illusion of added depth. With this thoughtful execution, Vin Leong has created a functional and clutter free space for his client to enjoy.

Nestled inside a two-story industrial building in eastern Paris, the extraordinary Maximalist mini loft reflects a Nintendo and comic book filled childhood and the creative passion of its owner, architect Anthony Authié of Zyva Studio. The open plan living, kitchen and dining area is a large 4.2 metre high grey box, featuring furniture made by either Authié himself or his friends, including a wooden sofa with red leather cushions and a 3D printed coffee table inspired by the Super Mario game’s spiny Koopa Troopas. The fully metallic kitchen, with metal doors and grey granite countertop, was inspired by Batman’s Mr. Freeze, and features neon pink 3D printed door handles and four vibrant orange stools resembling the pipes in the Super Mario games. A staircase, which doubles as a wall for one side of the kitchen, leads to the bedroom where a curtain of yellow fabric creates the illusion of a large yellow box. Every inch of this 57sqm apartment features imaginative and personalised touches, making it a truly one-of-a-kind living experience.

Located at the top of a heritage protected building in one of Lisbon's oldest industrial areas, the aptly named Marvila attic was completely transformed by KEMA Studio using sustainable, durable materials like fibre cement panels, metal and brick. Focusing on opening up the space and maximising natural light, KEMA removed all internal walls, creating an open-plan layout with seamlessly integrated kitchen, dining, and living areas. Nestled under the sloped roof, the living room features a full height storage wall, with a clever niche for a sofa that doubles as a single bed. A section of the kitchen is hidden within the living room storage unit and revealed by sliding pocket doors. The addition of 4 new skylights, two dormer windows and the clever placement of mirrors illuminates the space creating an open and airy atmosphere. With its clever design, this apartment optimises space and light without compromising comfort, making it a true gem in Lisbon's industrial heart.
