Our area of North Carolina got around 6-7 inches of snow, which is a lot of snow for us, and definitely enough for us to spend some time sledding. The kids had a blast sledding in the park and Em ended up having to go get them after they were gone all day. One of the neighborhood kids had a snowboard that everyone got to try out. Trying out the snowboard was the highlight for most kids. The little boys were being typical little stinkers, but Taylor Anne was able to snowboard a little even with them taunting her. We also got to hang out with Katie, one of the friends from the neighborhood, and she shared that she has her own YT channel, too. Check it out! Dangers of Spray Sunscreen : It didnt work! Em And the Gang 2018-08-14 | Here's a PSA - Spray Sunscreen can be dangerous. It didn't work for us! Em and The Gang decided to head to the beach for a quick getaway before school starts again. #emandthegang We all put sunscreen on, thinking we would be safe in the sun, but some of us got better coverage than others. One thing we didn't make sure to do was to spread the sunscreen by hand, and you can tell what happens by looking at Mike. The Spray sunscreen did not work without being spread by hand, leaving stripes and patches of sun burn all over his chest and back. Luckily, Mike is recovering well with treatments at home. It is important to learn from this, and wear sunscreen correctly to prevent skin cancer. Proper skin protection is very important, and it would be even better to wear UV protective clothing while out on the beach. While this isn't a specific spray sunscreen review, it would apply to all of the ones that are used. We use many brands and types, and you must spread them evenly by hand after spraying them on. Family Kayaking : Fun for All Ages Em And the Gang 2018-07-31 | In this episode, Em and The Gang paddles down the Maury River with a group of friends who live nearby in Virginia. Although there were downpours in the area, and the river was running a little high, we still had a blast paddling down the rapids (nothing above a class 2) and exploring the pools along the waterfall on a creek that dumps into the river. It was warm enough to get wet without being miserable, but also not too hot to enjoy the day. Linville Falls - Into the Gorge - part 2 Em And the Gang 2018-07-10 | Today Em and the Gang is hiking down into Linville Gorge. We visited the top of the falls and one overlook in part 1 of our trip, now we're going to venture over to the cliffs on the other side of the gorge, and then down into the gorge. The rushing water is amazing. It's so powerful and beautiful at the same time.For Taylor Anne's 16th birthday, we asked her what she wanted to do. "Go to the mountains!" was her reply. So, off we went - we decided to take her to one of our favorite locations while Mike and I were dating, Linville Falls. It's a beautiful location in Pisgah National Forest. Taylor Anne's birthday was filled with new sights, new favorite places, and some really fantastic views. The Appalachian mountains are full of beautiful and breathtaking sights. There are fantastic hikes with well maintained trails, the Linville Falls Hike is a wide gravel path for most of the way. Off Roading on OBX HWY 12 North to see Carova Wild Horses Em And the Gang 2018-04-26 | Em and the Gang go off-roading on the NC Outer Banks (OBX) over Spring Break. We went with friends along hwy 12 North to try to visit the Carova Volunteer Fire Department and see if we could find the wild horses that live on the island. Aerial tour of Camp Pipan : A private residence! Em And the Gang 2018-04-22 | "Camp Pipan" is a private home owned by the Pipan family on Kerr Lake, or Buggs Island Lake on the border of NC and VA. It is a beautiful location for exploring the outdoors, live the true lake life, and a favorite place to visit if you're someone who loves the outdoors! This is a fantastic place to go crappie fishing, bass fishing, or catfish fishing, in addition to kayaking, water skiing, or swimming. There is a lot of wildlife around and we have found beavers and otters to photograph, tons of fun birds to watch and listen for, and hiking trails made by residents of the neighborhood. The opportunities for animal photography are abundant. If you're a hunter, there are wildlife management areas along the lake as well.Kerr lake sits on the border of NC and VA, and is fed by the Dan and Roanoke Rivers. This flavorful dish is Quinoa with Spinach and Toasted Pecans. This is a part of a wonderful collaboration by an online group of outdoors lovers! If you would like to join with us and participate, see the info below! This week we have 11 collaborators on the playlist - check it out!!The recipe is:olive oil (1 T)1/2 cup quinoa rinsed, then drizzled with olive oil1/2 cup chopped pecans, drizzled with olive oil1 clove garlic, minced1 cup rinsed baby spinachsalt and pepper to taste1 cup water1. Boil/simmer quinoa until water is absorbed (remove from cup)2. Toast pecans and garlic lightly - stirring often to keep from burning3. Add spinach, stirring in as it wilts and cooks4. Add quinoa back to cup and stir into spinach/pecan mixture5. Cover, and cook above hot coals - not open flame, if you have a closed lid, you can also put some coals on top of the canteen cup. Allow to bake for 20-30 minutes. Check, and take off of the heat when you notice the top is crispy on the edges. Watch to see what we find during our thrift shop haul, and what Taylor Anne begs for. We visit our favorite thrift shop, Crossroads Emporium. This thrift store is found in Clarksville, VA, near Kerr Lake. They have just about everything you would expect at a thrift shop, but they also have a good selection of camping gear and outdoor gear in their military surplus area. Snorkeling in Hawaii Em And the Gang 2018-03-02 | Throwback Thursday - Episode 25! Join us as we go Snorkeling in Hawaii! This was our first time snorkeling as a family. We had a blast snorkeling in Hawaii with our kids while we were there for a vacation a few years ago. We were lucky to see so many beautiful tropical fish, and swim in a protected lagoon. It was overcast and rainy, so it was a bit chilly for most of us, but we didn't let that stop us from exploring the reef area. Family snorkeling trips are so much fun - you should try it!!We tried to label most of the fish, but we don't know all of the names, or we didn't get the best look at them. Exploring Mitchell Mill State Natural Area Em And the Gang 2018-02-23 | Em and Mike take the kids and dogs to explore at Mitchell Mill State Natural Area, along the Rolesville Batholith. youtu.be/2-Y_yVDYR1MIn last week's episode, we had a family hiking fail as we couldn't seem to find a good trail and kept running into dead ends. This week, we go back and find some good trails that lead to more fun water features and great rock outcroppings. We let the kids and dogs do some rock hopping and wading, even though it was a chilly day, and Mike and I follow an even longer trail down to the old dam. We will probably try to go back again sometime when it's warmer, too! Unfortunately, there are a lot of brier vines all over the paths. It probably isn't a good trail to take during the winter when everything is grown over. Hiking Fail | Dead Ends while hiking Em And the Gang 2018-02-16 | Today, Em and Mike take Anderson and the dogs hiking at a new location. Unfortunately, It is a hiking fail because it is full of dead ends and trails that are hard to follow because they are unmarked trails. In fact, none of the trails are marked. We still have a great time exploring along the Little River and seeing some cool rock formations. Our new location for this adventure is an amazing rock formation called the Rolesville Batholith. It's a place where a huge mass of granite has intruded into the surrounding rock in the area. Where we are visiting the Little River flows over the batholith, creating a lot of really pretty spots. There are small waterfalls, and many places where you can play among the boulders in the water. Indoor Horse Riding Adventure | Hunter Jumper Lessons Em And the Gang 2018-01-14 | In this episode, Em and the Gang have an indoor horse riding adventure, and spend the morning at an indoor riding arena for Taylor Anne's ride with Ruby. youtu.be/dNRROFoTnWIVote - Which intro do you like better? Riding horses is a huge part of her life, and we spend a ton of time at her hunter jumper lessons or at the barn. This lesson had to be inside because of the awful weather we've had in North Carolina lately. Taylor Anne and several other members of the "gang" participate in a horseback riding lesson, jumping their horses. Taylor Anne is into show jumping, and you''ll see that Ruby also loves jumping! Sometimes she jumps a little too big! The other horses are in training to go a little slower and with more control, they're ridden in more of a hunter style. Disappointed at the Holiday Express Em And the Gang 2018-01-07 | Disappointed at the Holiday Express - In this video, Em and the Gang is flashing back to a month ago, and our night of disappointment at the Pullen Park Holiday Express! youtu.be/ydNKh-DoOsAWe were so excited to take the train ride with lights, ride the historic carousel, play the carnival games, and sled on the man-made snow hills! We had talked it up with the kids, and they were pumped. They couldn't wait to see the man-made snow and the cool lights from the little train. Unfortunately, we were disappointed.It turns out the night we went to the Holiday Express was employee night (Mike works for the city, and loves it!) and there weren't enough volunteers for everything to be open. We didn't know that there were going to be fewer things open than they normally have when the Holiday Express is open to the public. We ended up being disappointed by having no carnival games and no snow hill to sled on. We were also not impressed by the lack of lights on the actual holiday express ride. We loved the carousel ride and the crafts were adorable. The volunteers were so sweet and everyone was very friendly. Overall, we all decided that the attraction is definitely one that is geared toward younger children and their families, as there really isn't much for older kids or teens to get excited about.This is real life, folks - sometimes our adventures are fun and exciting, and sometimes they're a bust. Holiday Cookie Baking Day 2017! Em And the Gang 2017-12-31 | Cookie Day 2017! Em and the Gang Cookie Adventure! youtu.be/x6FUtquxwgEWe decide to camp for the weekend at Hagan Stone County Park, in Guilford County, NC for our annual Cookie Day this year. This is a big tradition in Em's family, as family friends get together to make dozens and dozens of cookies. Most batches are double recipes, and everyone goes home with several tins full of cookies to give as gifts for Christmas. The kids all have a blast playing with their "once a year" friends. This year Anderson brings his entire NERF arsenal and there is an epic battle outside while the cookies are being baked inside. Mike also brings his drone and flies it around, which then turns it into a fun target for the kids to practice with.We had a great day and went back to Hazel where Anderson and Em had a wonderful time chatting and making S'mores.
