This is one of those songs that you hear on the radio and don't even realize is in an odd time signature because it flows so smoothly. It's in 7/4 (with the exception of the 2 bars in 4/4 at the end of the B section), and part of what makes it so beautiful is the use of pedaled bass notes throughout that are heard first in the guitar part in the intro, and then in the bass guitar once it joins in at the first interlude (as heard on the original recording).NOTE: At 1:23, I explain that you assign your thumb to the lowest 3 strings and the rest of your picking fingers to the higher strings, but a more accurate way to describe the technique would be that you assign your thumb to the alternating bass line, and then use your remaining digits on the strings above those notes. The ring finger is only used for the 4-note chords at the end of the B-section. My absolute favorite features about this guitar are the beautiful thin finish that helps the guitar resonate and gives you more feel as you play, and the neck, which has a delightfully ergonomic shape that feels extra comfortable whether you're playing rhythm or lead. Obviously, mic-ing the guitar is always ideal, but for those gigs where mics aren't an option, this is the most high fidelity pickup I've found. I'm using it here with my Martin HD-28V running straight into an M-Audio interface, recorded with Cubase. I tried to keep this as raw sounding as possible. For even better results, you can run it into your preamp of choice and fine tune the EQ.
