Midway through my 72-hour reading marathon, reality has set in. Setbacks, sickness, fatigue, and unexpected interruptions have forced me to adjust my original goal — but the challenge is still very much alive. Here’s where things stand at the halfway point.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Steve Donoghue recently posted a response to Ryan Holiday’s “26 tips for reading,” and it’s well worth your time — especially if you care about how reading actually works in the real world rather than in theory. One thing this marathon has already reinforced for me is that reading rarely follows tidy rules. Real life intervenes — you get tired, you get sick, people drop by, plans change — and the real test is whether you keep showing up to the page anyway.
