In this eye-opening documentary, I spend a grueling week living less than 40 miles from the Syrian border inside Domiz—the largest refugee camp in Iraq. Housing over 32,000 residents fleeing the horrors of the Syrian civil war, what was once a mass of mud and tents has evolved into a thriving, self-made city with a shocking economy. Meet Hazwan, a single man sending every penny back to his family; Fatima, a brilliant 19-year-old learning English from Disney movies while evading the reality of child marriage; and a family mourning a tragic loss at sea. This is a story of incredible resilience, deep community pride, and the heartbreaking limbo of people trying to rebuild the concept of "home."
