Shiva Parvati Duel | Kathak Dance Presentation IndianRaga 2023-03-24 | An energetic performance based on the mythological story of the dance competition between Shiva and Parvati, in which, after an intense competition, Lord Shiva wins by lifting his right leg against his head, a pose Parvati could not do because of her restrictions as a woman. We have modified the ending and portrayed that Parvati also amazes the audience, making it impossible to determine a winner. Hence, Ardhanarishvara, the form of Shiva and Parvati together, is declared the winner. "Mirror Image Jatiswaram" attempts to cultivate synergy between the left brain(also called Ida) and the right brain( also called Pingala). Dance training over the years has made us comfortable prioritizing the right side of our bodies (for example, starting any dance movement with the right leg or right arm). The idea was to show both strong, Tandava, and soft, Laasya, elements of Shakti. Shakti is divine feminine energy personified as Goddesses. This piece uses the stark differences between Bharatanatyams’ angular ridged steps and postures and Odissis’ soft movements and intricate footwork. Journey home dance IndianRaga 2022-10-01 | Set to IndianRaga’s Journey Home, this piece explores the concept of the “journey of a bharatanatyam dancer.” The dancers’ journeys begin and end with the namaskar-- a prayer seeking the blessings from mother earth to allow the dancers to stamp on the ground. They begin their journey with adavus, which are the basic building blocks of bharatanatyam. After mastering these building blocks (depicted in the first 1.5 min), the dancers learn their first item, Alarippu (alluded to in the following 30 sec), and finally reach a point where they can confidently dance with bells on their feet (captured in the last 40 sec). This piece also captures the intricate makeup and jewellery that dancers learn to wear before performing on stage. As time progresses, the elder sibling leaves home, leaving the younger sibling distraught, and both siblings struggle being away from each other. First comes the impatient, yet excited young woman, who embodies the essence of childish love. Following her is a woman who is longing for and worrying about her beloved. Then comes a woman who expresses frustration and impatience, while reluctantly adoring her lover. And lastly, there is a romantic and confident woman who reminisces about her lover’s beauty and makes preparations for his return. Piya Se Naina | Desh Thillana | Bharatanatyam Dance | Online Dance Fellowship IndianRaga 2022-02-12 | This bharatanatyam piece is set to a fusion of Lalgudi Jayaraman’s Desh thillana and Amir Khusrau’s Sufi poem Main to Piya se naina, which was later composed into a song by Ram Sampath. Here, the dancers contrast romantic (sringara) love, which is described in the poem, with the devotional (bhakti) love described in the thillana. The two adult dancers take turns depicting the main character (nayika) of the poem, and use facial expressions (abhinaya), to convey to the audience how the nayika is feeling after seeing her beloved.
