# Slavoj #Zizek #SlavojŽižekSlavoj Žižek - For a left that dares to speak its name (Oct 2019)Ippolit Belinski2020-01-17 | The lecture is as diverse as they can be, both humorous and serious, and in my opinion one of the better public lectures that Žižek has had in a while. It is not very 'philosophical' though. At the table you have Peter Bratsis and Jeremy Glick. The lecture took place on 9 October 2019 at CUNY, New York.
# Slavoj #Zizek #SlavojŽižekSlavoj Žižek - The Rise of Obscene Masters: Taking Donald Trump seriously (Nov 2019)Ippolit Belinski2019-12-27 | Zizek's lecture delivered at Birkbeck (London) on November 20th 2019. This is one of those lectures that should be listened to very carefully in the upcoming elections, especially because it seems left leaning public has not learnt their lesson very well.
Abstract: Not such a long time ago, in a galaxy that now appears far, far away, the public space was clearly distinguished from the obscenities of private exchanges. Today, however, not only we can read in the mass media about the intimate details of public personalities, populist politicians themselves often regress to shameless obscenity. It is the very PUBLIC domain in which “fake news” circulates, in which rumors and conspiracy theories abound. One should not lose sight of what is so surprising about this rise of shameless obscenity. Traditionally (or in our retroactive view of tradition, at least), shameless obscenity worked as subversive, as an undermining of traditional domination, as depriving the Master of his false dignity. In the 1960s protesting students liked to use obscene words or make obscene gestures to embarrass figures of power and, so they claimed, denounce their hypocrisy. However, what we are getting today, with the exploding public obscenity, is not the disappearance of authority, of Master figures, but its forceful reappearance – we are getting something unimaginable decades ago, obscene Masters.

Perhaps more important here is what communism means for Zizek and in what ways we can understand it today. The debate took place on December 7th 2019 at the University of Bergen.

He visited the Fleming Museum of Art where, at least in my view, he had a much more productive and more philosophical discussion on Hegel. The talk is titled (I can't verify this) 'Hegel with Neuralink; or, Will our Immersion into Singularity Save Us from the Fall?'. The talk took place on April 16th 2019 at the University of Vermont.

# Slavoj #Zizek #SlavojŽižekSlavoj Žižek - Sex and the Failed Absolute (Part II, Nov. 2018)Ippolit Belinski2018-11-21 | A Mastrclass with Žižek at Birkbeck University of London. Masterclass took place on November 7th 2018 and is in a series of two.
Abstract: We will tackle straight on the old metaphysical topic: is it possible for us, finite and mortal humans, to achieve some kind of contact with the Absolute? After a brief overview of the traditional and modern answers (ecstatic religious union with the Absolute, immersion into the primordial Void, identification with the destructiveness of nature, intellectual intuition, transcendental-historical reflection, etc.), we will propose the Lacanian answer: sexuality is our primordial brush with the Absolute – sexuality as our basic experience of failure, of impossibility. This becomes palpably clear in our historical moment when this status of sexuality is under threat. In deploying this thesis, we will pass through many particular topic: Beckett’s art of abstraction; neurotheology; sexbots; fake news; quantum physics; posthumanity.
# Slavoj #Zizek #SlavojŽižekAgon Hamza, Frank Ruda, and Slavoj Žižek – Reading Marx (Nov 2018)Ippolit Belinski2018-11-07 | Discussion took place at ‘The Light’ Lecture Theatre on November 6th 2018.
Marx’s critique of political economy is vital for understanding the crisis of contemporary capitalism. Yet the nature of its relevance and some of its key tenets remain poorly understood. This bold intervention brings together the work of leading Marx scholars Slavoj Žižek, Frank Ruda and Agon Hamza, to offer a fresh, radical reinterpretation of Marxism that explains the failures of neoliberalism and lays the foundations for a new emancipatory politics.
This is in the form of a dialogue between authors Agon Hamza, Frank Ruda, and Slavoj Žižek. Each speaker gives a brief 20 minute talk, followed by a debate, chaired by Professor Maria Aristodemou (Birkbeck School of Law).
Avoiding trite comparisons between Marx’s worldview and our current political scene, the authors show that the current relevance and value of Marx’s thought can better be explained by placing his key ideas in dialogue with those that have attempted to replace them. Reading Marx through Hegel and Lacan, particle physics, and modern political trends, the authors provide new ways to explain the crisis in contemporary capitalism and resist fundamentalism in all its forms. Reading Marx will find a wide audience amongst activists and scholars.

The relationship of rage, rebellion and new power forms a kind of dialectical triad of the revolutionary process. In the beginning there are the more or less chaotic outbursts of rage, the dissatisfaction of the people, which they demonstrate more or less violently; however unorganized and without a clear goal. Once this potential of rage is organized, the result is, with a minimum of organization, a more or less conscious image of an enemy and an idea of what would have to change. When the rebellion was successful in the end, the new rulers were confronted with the immense task of organizing the new society - remember the anecdote narrated by the exchange of ideas between Lenin and Trotsky on the eve of the October Revolution. Lenin says, "What happens to us when we fail?" Trotsky replies: "And what happens to us when we are successful?" The problem is that we can hardly ever bring the triad of rage, rebellion and new power in an order of a logically conclusive advance. The chaotic rage spreads out arbitrarily and diffusely, or strikes into the populism of the right; the successful rebellion loses strength and loses itself in many compromises. If this is the case, we must conclude that the rage does not only fail at the beginning, but also at the end of so many emancipatory projects.

As Herbert Marcuse put it back in the 1960s, freedom (from ideological constraints, from the predominant mode of dreaming) is the condition of liberation. If we only change reality in order to realize our dreams, and do not change these dreams themselves, we sooner or later regress to old reality. The first act of liberation is therefore for us to become ruthless censors of our dreams. Lecture delivered on November 11th 2014 in Sheikh Zayed Theatre, London (UK).
