Do you recall the unforgettable moment when Lavon Miller's Cummins engine had its dramatic dyno mishap? Yes, the one that sent shockwaves across the internet. Well, this is that very engine, or rather, the remnants of it. While undergoing rigorous turbo testing with a pair of 5-blade Stainless Diesel chargers, this 2,200-plus horsepower, seasoned and rugged powerplant reached around 4,500 rpm, only for the factory cast-iron 6.7L block to spectacularly disintegrate around the rotating assembly. Astonishingly, amidst the chaos, the cylinder head and fuel injectors emerged unscathed from the explosion.INSIDE a Duramax Cp4 Injection Pump: Stop-MotionToxic Performance2023-09-08 | While the Bosch CP4.2 might be familiar to many as the standard high-pressure fuel pump in our LML Duramax or 6.7L Power Stroke engines, this remarkable component has a storied history. With an impressive capability of 39,000 psi (2,700 bar), the CP4 stands ready to meet the most stringent diesel emission standards, having played a vital role alongside both piezo and solenoid-style injectors in a multitude of passenger car makes and models across the global spectrum. A staggering production tally of over 40 million CP4 units attests to its prevalence. Bosch's ingenious modular design permits the pump to be scaled up (CP4.2) or down (CP4.1) based on the fuel system prerequisites and spatial constraints of various original equipment configurations.
In the annals of automotive evolution, the Bosch CP4.2 made its debut in the North American truck arena in 2011, gracing both the 6.7L Power Stroke and the LML Duramax engines. It's worth noting that a closely related variant, the CP4.1, had already made its mark in diverse markets including Volkswagen, BMW, and over 20 other global brands. Fast forward eight years, and this fuel pump has become a staple in the majority of diesel engines powering the truck segment. While GM transitioned to the Denso HP4 pump for the L5P Duramax in '17, the CP4.2 continues to find its place in the 6.7L Power Stroke, the 3.0L VM Motori EcoDiesel in Ram 1500s, the 5.0L Cummins in the Nissan Titan XD, and even the new 6.7L Cummins power plant. It's abundantly clear: the enduring presence of this pump is an assurance it will remain a cornerstone for the foreseeable future.
Falling Victim Once Again: The Peril of CP4.2 Failures
In the landscape of modern engineering, few setbacks strike as profoundly as the CP4.2 failure. Its specter looms over your '11-'16 LML Duramax or the ongoing '11-present 6.7L Power Stroke, a constant specter of risk. Although not all instances of CP4 failure are as catastrophic as the one about to be detailed, the detonation of the high-pressure fuel pump housing due to internal malfunction is a grim reality. This very issue came to light, and concurrently, efforts to rectify it were underway within the ranks of the Toxic Diesel team.
To this day, the infiltration of air into the high-pressure fuel circuit remains the primary catalyst for CP4.2 failures. This insidious process sets in motion a sequence that causes the lifter buckets to rotate, compelling their associated roller lifters into harsh metal-on-metal contact with the cam lobe—a destructive convergence that underscores the urgency of addressing this vulnerability.

Brian Rogers, the CEO of Firewire LED's, found himself at the crossroads of these two worlds, poised to create something truly extraordinary for the SEMA show, an event known for pushing the limits of automotive innovation.
Brian had never ventured into the realm of building something for SEMA. He had always considered it a challenge to find a project that hadn't already been explored in the world of extreme automotive customization. But this year, something changed within him, a spark of inspiration that set his imagination on fire.
He took to his Facebook page to announce, "I've never built anything for myself to take to SEMA. Mostly because it's really hard to find something that hasn't been done. But not this year." His words were cryptic, intriguing, hinting at a revelation that was about to shake the automotive community.
What Brian had in mind was nothing short of extraordinary—an audacious project that defied convention. His canvas for this masterpiece was a 1948 Ford 8N tractor, a family heirloom that had been passed down through the generations. Brian's great-grandfather had purchased it brand new, and it had been a fixture on their farm ever since.
The tractor held sentimental value for Brian, as it had been the very first vehicle he had ever driven. But instead of preserving it as a relic of the past, he harbored an unconventional vision—to transplant an old-school 7.3-liter Power Stroke engine into this venerable machine.
"I had the crazy idea for a 7.3 engine, and of course, [I have] to use twin turbos," Brian explained with a grin. "I mean, it is SEMA, so we had to go big." And go big, they did. To accommodate the newfound power and style, they upgraded the rear wheels to colossal 28x16-inch TIS rims, and for that ultimate off-road experience, they chose imposing 44-inch Interco Boggers.
The project, for now, existed solely as a rendering—an artist's conception of what could be. But if Brian's vision were to come to life even remotely close to what was depicted, the world would witness the birth of one of the coolest tractors ever to grace the automotive stage.
Imagine the roar of the 7.3-liter Power Stroke engine as it came to life within the iconic Ford 8N chassis. Envision it hooked to a sled, the engine bellowing in defiance as it tore through the dirt, leaving a trail of amazement in its wake.
As Brian and his team worked tirelessly to turn this extraordinary vision into a tangible reality, the anticipation among automotive enthusiasts grew. The 1948 Ford 8N tractor was about to transcend its humble agricultural origins and become a symbol of innovation, heritage, and the audacity to dream big. SEMA 2021 was poised to welcome an unrivaled masterpiece, one that would forever be etched in the annals of automotive history.

They built the engine and transmission in-house along with the truck itself using Exergy Performance pumps and injectors to help their Duramax outperform the competition.
Tony made sure to make a statement in 2019 and not just because he crashed the internet with his now-famous Dyno run ball of fire. But because Tony’s team and with help from the UCC Competitors they rebuilt the truck overnight and hit the dirt for the sled pull competition. Each time the air/fuel mixture inside a cylinder is ignited, the combustion that occurs creates a torque spike that is applied to the crankshaft through the piston and rod. This torque spike is so severe that it not only turns the crankshaft, it actually twists the crankshaft ahead of its normal rotation and then the crankshaft rebounds. This twisting action is known as torsional vibration. When these torque spikes and forces get into phase with the natural frequency, critical torsional harmonic vibrations occur and can be seriously destructive to the bearings and the crankshaft. Dampers are designed to control those destructive vibrations.
A new Fluidampr on your diesel truck will not only protect your engine from destructive torsional vibrations but will also increase TORQUE & HORSEPOWER. High performance diesel engines running chips and programmers are exceptionally vulnerable to torsional vibrations. Save your crank & more by installing a new Fluidampr today.
The best dampers on the market are manufactured in the U.S.A. by Horschel Motorsports, an ISO 9001:2000 certified facility. HM is continuing the tradition that started in 1946, when the first viscous damper was invented. Over 4 million viscous dampers have been made for heavy-duty diesel, drag car, stock car, street machine, race boat and other high performance engines.6.7L Cummins Race Truck Built From ScratchToxic Performance2020-03-29 | Ben Shadday owner of Done Right Diesel Performance of Osgood, IN, Ben Shadday is about as cool & down to earth kind of a guy as you can find, but one thing he gets fired up about is drag racing diesel trucks.
