dadduA compilation of the 29 non-disqualified entries of Task 7 in the Super Mario 64 TAS Competition 2019.
I tried to show the pyramid route separately, but only 10 entries use it and I barely can't show 19 Mario's at the same type so I had to include DyllonStej with the pyramid group so it would fit in two clips.
Task: collect the red coin in the opposite corner of the course. No triple jumps, BLJ or C^ hyperspeed allowed.
I recorded the making of this video, which can be found here: youtu.be/QgGftZueX30

This compilation includes 3 entries of people that were eliminated from the tournament, the "Losers Bracket". "L1" in the ranking means "1st in the losers bracket".
Task: Using the provided .st, start timing by collecting the 100 coin star (to be specific, it starts after textbox). Collect 2 of the 3 red coins in that area before warping. The warps are marked by 1-ups. After warping, collect all of the 5 red coins in the area. Timing ends when the seventh red coin is collected.

Because the task is so short, I'm showing all runs twice, from two angles.
In the video overlay, Ystem's entry is first, but the run is sort of disqualified because you're not supposed to collect the vanish cap before timing starts. Because this was not stated in the task description, the is still in the competition.

My timing for the ghost compilation is one frame longer than the official timing for about half of the entries. I don't know what causes this discrepancy, but it's the reason why fifdspence (19"20 official timing, 19"23 in this replay) comes before Eru (19"23) in the list.

SMB64 luckily doesn't use much of the expanded RAM, but it does continuously write 0xFF to the lower byte of the button flags. I guess that's one way of disabling camera controls. It means all C-buttons and shoulder buttons are permanently pressed, it took a while to realize that was why my replay randomly zoomed in and fast forwarded.
At least operating the camera was really easy this time. Looks a bit like Super Mario Bros. Online.

End by dying.
Apparently I couldn't be bothered to rotate the boxes correctly. Also I cut off the first replay after 2003041's entry since it would just show another 20 seconds of SuperM789 breaking two more boxes than necessary.
Background music: Throwback Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2
Marios are flying all over the mountain, so the first replay is spliced (TAS is cheating anyway so it's okay) to show entrants on both sides of the mountain. I didn't include Zombie's run. It's not disqualified, but very slow (almost 60 seconds) and not included in the official results either.
Task summary: Enter Tick Tock Clock on the Still setting and collect the star Timed Jumps On Moving Bars. The L button is set to spawn wing cap boxes, and you may spawn up to 5 wing cap boxes.

Of course with so many different routes in different courses, there can't be a full ghost comparison this time. There were however three routes that were found multiple times, so these are included in this comparison:
In Whomp's fortress, column 2 is completed: -End by Dying -0x A Press -Collect at least 7 yellow coins -Collect at least 1 1-up -Touch at least 2 signs
Note that the 1-up is spawned from the butterfly, which is not visible in the video.
Then in Lethal Lava Land, column 2 is completed too. The runs end when Mario dies from the Lava boosts. The 1-up is collected after the death fade-out (except for 2003041 who does a lava boost afterwards).
Finally, in Tiny Huge Island, column 1 is completed: -Take fall damage -End by swimming animation -Break a cork / crazy box -Break at least 2 [!] block -Sideflip at least 4 times

I messed up the timing a bit in this one, it stops when the star is collected while it should only stop once Mario does the star dance. Most of the time this isn't a problem, but AndrewSM64 did a spectacular sideflip into the star costing him lots of time in the official timing but not in the replay. That's why he has a red cap (for 12th place) instead of an orange one (for 13th place).
Super Mario 74 doesn't use much of the expanded memory, though the parts it does use are very fragmented. Can't they just leave 1Mb of consecutive RAM free? So inconsiderate that ROM hacks are not made with TAS comp replay hacks in mind...

This is another chaotic one, with routes diverging a lot and different water levels. I chose a pretty low water level, so you'll see some Marios swimming in air or standing on invisible platforms that are supposed to float higher.
Task: In Wet-Dry World (main area), start your run inside the cannon, collect at least one coin from each of the three ring/line of coins, and end by either collecting the star "Shocking Arrow Lifts" or "Top of the Town".

Anastazja 35"73Time-lapse of making a SM64 ghost replay video (task 7)daddu2019-04-21 | Some people asked me before how I make a ghost replay video for the SM64 TAS competition. While I explained the basics, I think it is more useful to just have a recording of the process. As you can see it's quite bodged, and I'm still looking for ways to improve the workflow, but it isn't too bad currently.
The screen recording is sped up roughly 20 times. Before the recording, I downloaded the results and background music. After the recording, I rendered and uploaded the video. The video shows everything in between: - extracting Mario's state from .m64s - dividing the entries into separate groups - recording the camera movement - rendering a .jpg sequence at 60 fps - removing lag frames - creating the overlay text / thumbnail - editing in Vegas

Task description: break 2 out of 3 wing cap boxes and collect the star behind Chain Chomp's gate.
Since there are three options of which box to break first, I grouped the entries by that to avoid too much spread. There were 18 entries going to the right first which takes a little too much memory (the limit is 17) to show all at once, so those are separated as well.

Last video, Michael Fradley suggested to "consider following strats that are similar in lumped groups rather than necessarily lumping by time alone", so instead of showing the top half and bottom half, I show the routes going past Whomp King and those staying low separately. The routes are still diverging a lot, but I think it helps keeping most Marios in view.

The task objective is to get the red coin on the tree starting from the warp pipe opposite to it.
No colored caps this time, the emulator would randomly crash with it and I don't know why. In general working with Super Mario Star Road was harder since some of the addresses have changed and it uses much of the 4 Mb expansion pack memory, leaving only 0.7 Mb of free consecutive memory for replay data. Also I think the emulator doesn't save the expansion pack memory in savestates since using them between levels would lead to crashes as well.

I used the wrong savestate and now the wing cap boxes are misplaced :( There should be one on the little island in the front and one near the pipe on the right.
The routes are a lot more diverging than in task 1, which makes it more interesting but also more chaotic. I did give different entries different cap colors this time so you can distinguish individual runs better.

The bottom 12 entries diverge too far to make a great comparison so I left those out. mkdasher made such a comparison once for task 2 of 2016 (youtube.com/watch?v=WB-v3NBwmSQ) which was well received, so I thought it'd be fun to make another one, but using memory hacking instead of video compositing which makes it easier to have a dynamic camera.
Entries are shown 12 at a time because the game crashes when too many Mario's are drawn, and it would probably also become quite cluttered otherwise.
Background music is a remix of Moo Moo Farm by Bulby youtube.com/watch?v=fzwArllDnEc youtube.com/channel/UCz6zvgkf6eKpgqlUZQstOtQEffectinfo and EnemyInfo - SM64 Debug codedaddu2018-05-30 | In this video I show everything I found out about the Effectinfo and Enemyinfo debug menus in Super Mario 64. These were used by the developers to tweak settings while playing. While all this functionality is disabled in the final game, the code still remains in the ROM. With memory hacks they can be re-enabled.
For brevity, I didn't go into much detail in some areas. Extra info can be found in this document where I put notes about these menus as well as other debug related code:
To check whether two objects come in contact which each other, the game checks: - whether the distance between them in the horizontal xz-plane is smaller than the sum of both objects' hitbox radii - whether the range [y-offset, y-offset+height] of both objects overlap
So hitboxes are almost always just cylinders. Approximating collision with basic shapes isn't uncommon in games, but in Super Mario 64 the cylinders aren't always a tight fit.
Separately, geometry that Mario can stand on consists of floor, wall and ceiling triangles. Most of the time visible triangles map 1:1 to collision triangles, but some objects are approximated as boxes.
Also, there are some invisible walls. In Whomp's Fortress there is a wall that is supposedly there to prevent you from doing a Water Upwarp (water rectangles extend infinitely down and getting under one puts you at the surface). And the funnel in Bowser in the Fire Sea has walls behind it for some reason.
