How to: Count Rows of Knitting | Stockinette Stitch & Garter Stitch Demonstrations Rokolee DIY 2023-05-16 | This tutorial shows you how to count the number of knitted rows in stockinette (and reverse stockinette) stitch, as well as garter stitch. I try to give you an idea how each of these patterns is constructed, as this will help a lot when counting the yarn loops.In stockinette stitch, you just count the 'V' shapes (since the V is just the visible part of the yarn loops). One V = one row.In reverse stockinette, you will see wavy lines made up of 'n' and 'u' shapes. Each line of 'u's and 'n's is one row.In garter stitch, the easiest way to count the rows is to count the 'ridges'. Just like reverse stockinette, 'n' and 'u' shapes can be seen making up each ridge, however this time each ridge represents 2 rows (not 1). So count the ridges on the front and the back; if the number of ridges is the same on each side, times by 2 to get the number of rows. If it's not the same number of ridges on each side, the actual number of ridges is in between these 2 numbers. Multiply that by 2 to get the number of rows. Any mismatch in ridge numbers is because you've knitted an odd number of rows. One ridge = one row.
