The UCSD campus and the NHERI TallWood testing site hosted Simpson Day. Our Simpson Strong-Tie employees had the opportunity to watch a live in-person seismic test of the 10-story mass-timber building. This is the tallest full-scale building ever constructed on an earthquake simulator. This building was put to the test and still stands tall. Although the results of this experiment will take some time to be published, we're excited to see what new insights it will bring and how it can help us build safer, stronger, structures.Building the World’s Tallest Mass Timber shake table testSimpson Strong-Tie2023-05-08 | ...Building the Worlds Tallest Full-Scale Mass Timber Building for Seismic TestingSimpson Strong-Tie2023-05-08 | Watch this time-lapse construction of a 10-story mass timber building, built as part of the NHERI TallWood Test project that aims to demonstrate the resilience of tall timber structures. The residents loved their existing open-concept decks and wanted to rebuild them with no additional wires or beams for support. To figure out a solution, contractor Jeremy Aronson of Aronson Construction consulted his engineer, Brian Moskow, P.E., of Red Engineering + Design, who in turn contacted Simpson Strong-Tie to find a tested solution that would satisfy his client’s needs while making sure the deck was built safe and to code. Our Simpson Strong-Tie engineers visited the jobsite and suggested the brick veneer ledger (BVLZ) as a viable alternative to building a freestanding deck. This patent-pending connector kit attaches the deck’s wood ledger directly to the house’s framing through the veneer. Happy with the results on the Walker house, Aronson Construction determined the BLVZ would be a great solution also for the Flemming residence, which similarly had an elevated deck against a brick-veneered home.
