Here's how we made our first fully playable (free!) Game Boy game: The Squid Game demake!
In this deep dive, I walk you through how we built the entire project using GB Studio, how we animated everything in Aseprite, and how the story, cutscenes, and mechanics came together to recreate Squid Game Season 1 on a real Game Boy.
This is a full making-of / devlog, showing off the actual project file, sprite work, scene scripting, and more. Whether you're curious about how demakes are built, or just want to peek under the hood, I hope you'll find something cool in here!

🔧 Tools used in this project:
GB Studio - engine for Game Boy homebrew development
Aseprite - for pixel art, sprite sheets, and tilemaps
Photoshop - for the manual and box design and backgrounds/cutscenes
🧠 The game includes:
-6 minigames from Squid Game Season 1
-Story Mode, Minigame Select, and a brutal Hard Mode
-3 endings and a few secret cheat codes hidden in the manual
-Printable box art and cartridge sticker
