In the 13th and final Episode, the "Barenboim on Beethoven" series concludes with a spirited performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, with the young Barenboim at the helm of the New Philharmonia Orchestra. There is no motif in Western music more widely known or parodied than the one that opens Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, with its hammer blows of fate.

Now, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary in 2020, the episodes have been resurrected in their original form.

Episode 12 takes a closer look at Sonata No. 32 in C Minor, Op. 111. Of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, this last one is unique in its makeup, consisting of just two movements. As Barenboim puts it, the two movements balance each other out with a “prevailing inner logic”: if the first movement, “with its terrifying energy, shows us only one side of Beethoven’s nature… this world with all its struggles,” the second - variations on an Arietta - presents a vision of “eternity undisturbed,” a profoundly spiritual expression of a pure innocence “consciously won, through the lessons of experience.”

Barenboim suggests that when we think of Beethoven as a symphonist par excellence, it is not only because of his nine legendary symphonies; it’s also because “almost all his music, symphonic, instrumental or vocal, has a certain unmistakable symphonic character about it.” Sitting at the piano, Barenboim looks at the qualities with which Beethoven infused all his work - the “sheer breadth of his expression,” his “sensitivity for color and sound… just as acute as that of the French Impressionists,” and his compulsion to depict and overcome the great struggle of the human condition.

“I doubt whether in the whole history of the arts,” says Daniel Barenboim, “there has been such a great stride forward in such a short time… I believe it opens a new page in the history of human consciousness.” He is speaking about Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the Eroica, among the composer’s most celebrated works with its ties to Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France. It was a watershed moment in the evolution of Beethoven’s artistry and the wider Romantic revolution.

In Episode 7, the remarkable Fourth Piano Concerto concludes with Daniel Barenboim alongside Sir Adrian Boult and the New Philharmonia Orchestra. The 2nd movement evokes a stirring dialogue between “the opposite extremes of Beethoven”: what Barenboim calls “a dramatic, energetic, almost bestial orchestra” and the “angelic, naïve statements of the piano.” Barenboim praises the architecture of the concerto and shows us how the “relation of the detail to the whole… contains the greatest possible beauty.” A transition of “perfect symmetry” leads into the final movement, lyrical and witty, with trumpets and drums subtly entering the fray.

Allegro Films 2022-05-30 | Matthew Percival's documentary "Christopher Nupen – Listening Through the Lens" guides us through the work of pioneering film director Nupen, who founded one of the first independent (television) production companies in the 1960s, at the dawn of the music documentary era. Seizing upon the emerging silent camera technology and his unique access to a golden generation of artists, he filmed classical music in a completely new and intimate way.

In the film, Nupen reflects on musicians and composers, spanning more than 50 years. He is joined by leading figures in music (Daniel Barenboim, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniil Trifonov, John Williams, Evgeny Kissin and Pinchas Zukerman) and broadcasting (David Attenborough, David Elstein, Michael Grade and Melvyn Bragg) who share their insight of a unique chapter in the history of music on television. "Listening Through The Lens" cherry-picks from Nupen’s best work from 1966 to 2017. When he started, he instinctively blended documentary and musical performance, to create a new genre of film. He filmed musicians at close quarters on stage, in their natural environment, where they have most to offer.
A musician himself, Nupen’s musical friends were among the most renowned artists of the 20th and 21st century. As his experience grew, he tackled musical ideas and the lives of the great composers (such as Schubert, Sibelius, Paganini, Tchaikovsky or Brahms).

The Oxford philosopher and historian, Sir Isaiah Berlin, described Nupen’s films as being "at just about the highest level which television is capable of reaching".

In Episode 3, Barenboim explores the importance of form – the "inner logic" of music that creates connections between sound and "embraces the very essence of musical experience". He explains Beethoven's preoccupation with the form as a tool that creates "a unity from opposing and themes" and contrasted, co-acting elements such as rhythm and melody.

In Episode 2, Barenboim shines the spotlight on Beethoven’s innovations: just as he refused to show subservience to his aristocratic patrons or “assume the role of a cook", he flouted convention in music. He chose to enliven his sonatas and symphonies with a frenetic, intense Scherzo in place of the Minuet movement that was so ingrained in tradition and society.
