Having lived on both the second-highest floor unit, as well as a ground floor unit, I hope I can provide some perspectives, on why I bought a ground-floor HDB against conventional wisdom. (highlighted in my other video.
Today I hope to share the lesser-known cons and dispel some myths about living on the ground floor.
#1 #2 You need Safety & Privacy -
While break-ins in Singapore are extremely rare, sometimes it still feels unsafe and uncomfortable even with window grills & cameras. My neighbor had her panties that she hung outside stolen and I sometimes get occasional weird glances from strangers, especially when there is an event(like funerals or weddings) outside of my house. Showering can also be scary as my window faces the walkway.
#3 You like a Private Walkway Space
While the garden outside is often used, for gardening and decorations, I would not feel safe keeping valuables such as expensive bicycles. In contrast, my mother's high floor unit walkway is always empty and very private.
#4 You need ‘the view’
While I think the preference for views is subjective, on the ground floor, you typically get a more ‘People & Greenery type of view’ as opposed to a seaside or city view. Personally I spend my time glued to my computer so and I almost never glance outside my window.
#5 Insects are EXTRA large
I personally did not experience more frequent insect invasion, but I definitely did notice the more sighting of rats, and BIG ants, like really large ones. But I believe this is in part due to the unit's individual distance to the rubbish chute.
#6 Noise
Surprisingly, my unit is not noisier than my mother's place most of the time. The two key differences I noticed are the extra loud pipes and chatty kids after school. I was pleasantly surprised the road is quiet, such that my standing fan is probably the most annoying sound. On an area note, Punggol has a ton of planes flying by so do take note!
