My original design for a electrically actuated lift using active stone blocks (or actuators). Just a proof of concept I threw together, so please excuse the messy laboratory. Could be wired to operate far faster with some kind of bird engine...

It's only possible due to the lovely, new multi-coloured wiring options. Of course the lovely new rope (and other items available in hard-mode) make this a mere curiosity (not to mention it's extreme clunky-ness)... Also, far more efficient elevators exist that exploit a 'glitch' that uplifts players (and player sized mobs) when jammed into a sloped block.
