The Ambiguous Cylinder Illusion is a fascinating trick on the mind that makes a simple shape appear to change form. Here's how it works:
The illusion typically involves a specially designed object that looks like a collection of flat panels arranged in a particular way. From certain angles, these panels create the illusion of a vertical cylinder.
The key to the illusion lies in the ambiguity of the panels' shapes. Depending on the viewing angle, the individual panels can appear either rectangular or square-like (when viewed from above), or circular (when viewed from the side).
Our brain tries to interpret the 3D shape based on the 2D information it receives from our eyes. When looking at the panels from different angles, the brain receives conflicting cues. It struggles to reconcile these cues and ends up flipping between interpreting the object as a cylinder (based on the side view) or a stack of flat shapes (based on the top view).
