Are the days in the Genesis creation account meant as literal 24-hour days? I believe there are very good reasons to believe that they are NOT primarily because the Old Testament writers frequently use the word “day” (yom in Hebrew) in a generic sense to speak about a period of time, just as we do when we say, for example, that in this day and age, most people have an Instagram account.”
For example, in Joshua, it says that “Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua” where the word “days” is clearly not meant to be understood as 24-hour periods. Even in the creation account itself, yom is used in a non-literal fashion when the writer summarizes what God did during the entire creation week by talking about “… the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.” [Gen. 2:4]
