Wood Turning #130 A Pendant Urn Type Thing The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2016-09-28 | How do you make an urn not look like an urn?The urn doesn’t depend on its size to impress upon us the memory of its new resident. So from the largest to the tiniest, they all do the same thing!This one presented me with a couple of stumpers!I had tried this out to see if it was going to work... and it was a much softer wood... and I didn’t really give the glue enough time to set up... and when it got down fairly close... it all came apart! Good thing it was empty! So of course I decided that this was what I wanted to do!Then this first piece of wood... more or less the right size... more or less the right shape... more or less the right colour....it was just more or less not the same as the cap! I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why it wasn’t fitting ... fortunately I looked at the bandsaw and there sat the piece I needed... right where I left it!Now I sort of casually marked the center on the top before I drilled it... I would have been much better advised to have marked it much more carefully... as that also relates to where the grain line up is going to be! I got this so that it was within a 1/16” but a line that doesn’t match ... still doesn’t match! I would imagine that there are a million and 2 ways of attaching the chain... on this one, to put a chain through the hole would require taking the end off the chain as there isn’t enough head there to put a hole big enough! I’m sure they make jump rings in the 3/8” variety but I didn’t have any on hand so I just used some copper wire that seemed to be heavy enough to do the job. And then I put a large jump ring on that so everything would hang properly when attached to a chain!It doesn’t look like I will be back to a weekly schedule quite yet... I still love getting the videos out... they just are taking me a wee bit longer these days! I will get just as many out as I can... just, I’m afraid, not on a very solid time table! Wood Turning #127 texted Sonny Days Urn The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2016-08-27 | Please accept my apologies for the length of time between videos these days. There has been a fair amount of upheaval around here this last while! My market is just about done for another year so I won’t have my endless array of tops and thumb things to make. It’s great that they sell... but boy do you ever have to come up with a lot of them!And now the shop is back to a state of comfort! There is stuff everywhere and a coating or two of sawdust over it all! But it is starting to work better than ever.I am still learning how the new --- model 25-II4QC MI--- for those with an interest --- lathe works... and finding much that I like! I don’t know that this one will stand the test of time as well as the old Craftsman... but the General can sure do some nifty thing the other one couldn’t!And then there are all the other tools that I am exploring... Dad’s drill press is only 2” bigger than my 8” ... but it sure makes a huge difference when drilling pen blanks.Everything is getting sorted and figured ... so now it’s just me that needs some improvements! I will find out for sure next week if I have to go back for more chemo or not... I’m rooting for the not! But either way I should be able to get the show on the road now that I have a place to work again!So the Cedar in this urn is one of those woods that you have to treat gently... it is fairly soft so it doesn’t take much to dent it! And if it’s end grain and it’s thin... it will probably break! You saw what happened to the foot that I had planned! That was why I left the part where the finial --- which was Ebony BTW--- as thick as I did... it might have looked better with more of a cresting splash... but if I had gone there, there probably wouldn’t have been anything left by the time I was done!And then there was the painting! My normal medium is chalk pastel ... but that is rather difficult to make stay on a piece like this! So I went to the dollar store and bought a box of 10 colours of acrylics, for 2 dollars! It is interesting stuff to work with! I guess the trick is to use your patience and let things dry before you go any further! I’ll have to try that some time! But it was fun to play with and it may not be the best portrait that Sonny has ever had done... but everybody that knew him will know who it is!Well I had best run... there is a Pallet Time Turner in the planning stages that needs some attention!Thanks for watchingLarryPS after using the parting tool on the lid... But I will do my best to let you know what he gets done! He usually only has a couple of good days between treatments... so I wouldn't expect it to go all that swiftly! I will help where I can.. but I have learned that if he asks me to stick my finger under that block of wood... it's probably not a great idea... last time it took him a week to find a replacement wedge!He has found some 2x10 material that will serve nicely as workbench tops and some other bits and pieces so I am sure that he will be tackling this as soon as he can!Thanks for watchingHealth & LightCedric
Wood Turning #126 Texted Branch Vase The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2016-03-03 | A branch found along a path can be a good walking stick ... or it might have more to it than that!This one was too short for walking with... unless you are a dog... but there was something about the way the end swooped over the way it did that made me stop and look at it a second time! And it seems that if I look at it twice... I usually end up bringing it home! At first I was unsure of the species but once I started turning it I began to recognize the attributes of red alder, after it has started to spalt. As I mention in the video the center of it was pretty soft, but the dowel should fix any future problems there! At least the wire looks cool... ‘cause it doesn’t do anything for strength! And it didn’t do much for my sense of how things should go either! But it ended up good so that is all that counts!Flowers are always fun to do... and this dipping in shellac really makes perfect final touch! But when I originally did this with the regular wood inside... at first I thought of it as a flame vase... but then the flower didn’t sit quite right. I noticed then that the vase could have a leaf pattern in it too and decided to try the stain to try and accentuate it more. I think it worked! Cedric has words over there that should not be missed... he can be an interesting guy to have around!The other link the I have put there is to the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society... the lighthouse property has been left untended for a long time... the society was formed in 2003... and the broom has run amuck! A group of volunteers came out and put their backs into it and in just a couple of hours were able to clear the road way down! The clearing at the bottom had been done the week before. I think these people deserve a huge amount of appreciation from those of us who merely go and enjoy the sights! Without you... we wouldn’t be able to see anything anyway! The annual 4th Christmas Ornament Entry TTW The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2015-12-01 | So again this is not the final video! There is so much more to tell than this can say! There are things like the lights turn off and on by turning the top piece! This would have been a great project for the WyomingWoodturner Sam Angelo... but I don't have any of that kind of gear anyway... so I took a hack saw and cut the top off a pop bottle. Gluing the top of the bottle to the top ball makes a place for wires and the battery. I soldered washers to the two wires and then the battery sits on one... and the insulation on the upper one keeps the top washer from making contact until you turn the lid all the way closed!But that will be all looked into in the next videos! Thanks to Carl and Alan for putting on the challenge and for doing all the hard work!Thanks too for watchingLarry

Wood Turning #122 The Real Brass Point The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2015-11-14 | After losing pieces left right and center I finally managed to get this together! First off I lost the bolt from which this was turned and then once I got the first one turned I lost the cup drive! It will all show up again eventually.... but when you want to turn something now.... eventually just doesn’t cut it!I believe that I will make more of these down the road... I think that there may be shapes which will help certain projects even more... but unless it is an earth shatteringly new concept... I think you will have seen enough points for now!Surprise surprise! I managed to save some of the shavings too! Little curlicues of brass look pretty cool! Some day there may be a project that will require some brass hair or something! Sure a good thing I don’t work in a metal shop!I thought I would try something a little different with the video this time... This was my first talk over and I think that it went pretty well... the shorter video made it easier... I think a longer one with me in it would just be a little too much! Different sitting in front of two cameras and a microphone! Sort of like writing... without the pen! Another thing to add to the idea bank!Now I just have to get back out there and come up with a Christmas ornament... I have a whole lot of wood to choose from here too! Now to choose the right ones! There’s a foggy image of what I want.. But of course... as always... we’ll see what the wood says!I think I am going to do a shameless plug for my other channel here too! I know it’s not a turning channel but there are lots of people out there who like other things too! It will all show up again eventually.... but when you want to turn something now.... eventually just doesn’t cut it!I believe that I will make more of these down the road... I think that there may be shapes which will help certain projects even more... but unless it is an earth shatteringly new concept... I think you will have seen enough points for now!Surprise surprise! I managed to save some of the shavings too! Little curlicues of brass look pretty cool! Some day there may be a project that will require some brass hair or something! Sure a good thing I don’t work in a metal shop!I thought I would try something a little different with the video this time... This was my first talk over and I think that it went pretty well... the shorter video made it easier... I think a longer one with me in it would just be a little too much! Different sitting in front of two cameras and a microphone! Sort of like writing... without the pen! Another thing to add to the idea bank!Now I just have to get back out there and come up with a Christmas ornament... I have a whole lot of wood to choose from here too! Now to choose the right ones! Wood Turning #121 Getting the Point The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2015-11-07 | www.ukiws.co.ukUK & Ireland Woodturning SymposiumCoventry, 18th and 19th June2016So this is a case of a shop that needs cleaning more than anything else! I am sure that the original will surface at some point! I used a screw this time because even though I had secured both a bolt and a screw made from brass... the point at which I was about to turn on the cameras.... I realized that the bolt was missing! I looked and looked but was unable to find it... so I went with the screw anyway! On the day I finished editing the first video.... I found the bolt! The difference it will make is that the end that goes into the drive should be more of a moris taper type fit... what I have here works but has not enough length to seat properly... and if it does seat... there is a great deal of hassle to get it back out again! As it turns out I have the cup which takes the point... and I also have a spur which takes a point... so I will to make an extra one so I don’t need to interchange them all the time!The brass turned very easily although I think it would probably have done better if I could have slowed the lathe down even more. These old lathes go as slow as 875 so a little fast... I use the trick of putting the belt on the smallest pulley but instead of running on the largest one at the other end I go to the next one over so the belt has a lot of slack in it... I also was just using a block of wood in the chuck with a screw driven into the center... next time with the bolt I should be able to use my pin jaws and hold it a little more securely. Nice thing about doing something for the first time... it will be better next time!Now the other thing that was happening with this turn... which was my first in a couple of weeks as a result of my dealings with the conjunctivitis and as it has happened the last in a while too! I guess the brightness of the brass and the concentrated effort of following what it was doing... my eye has been left kind of shimmery for now... I am sure that it will wear off... already it is better than it was! And very soon I will be back in the shop! The ideas don’t quit just because you are not out there!Oh and one last thing here... you know that bolt that was lost and now is found... well now the cupped moris taper is gone! As near as I can tell it was grapes that I should have washed first! Ah well! It has led to some interesting photo ops that you wouldn't normally get! And if there was a time of year to get this that was better suited... I can't think of it! The dollars you can save in makeup...and it even looks real!The most important part of this video is that it will go towards making a dream happen! And that is what this world is made up of...is dreams! Can a UFO impersonate a plane? In a dream it can! And in that dream it can also reunite a child with his/her family when they most need it!There sure is a lot to learn in the process of building a web site! And I think the worst part is that you spend a great deal of time learning one thing ...only to find that you don't need that after all...you need this one! And I am finding that even those ones have to be started over again from time to time! There is a sense of satisfaction you get when something works the way you hoped it would! As usual my first attempts were a little more ambitious than they should have been...but I'll get the hang of it soon I am sure!So Cedric's video has been an interesting project! I think that was almost 6 months! I'd go check that now but the power is off and I am sitting here with my oil lamp and my iPad! I guess I don't really need the lamp...it just makes the place feel more like it should! The only thing missing is the wood stove! I'm not sure how much wood would actually make it to the fire though...Well time passes and the power is back on! Out here in the boonies power outages are a common thing... although there haven't been as many this year as there have been in years passed! Not sure if that is because of technological advancements ... Or if the city is just advancing this way? Probably the latter! So once again I have to thank Jeff for the fine assortment of wood...it has been a treat to work on wood that has been prepared properly! The only time anything that has come my way in the past has only had wax applied after the turning! It will be interesting to see what comes out of the next one!Well I want to thank you all for watching and reading and I will try to get myself a bit more on schedule again... This last little bit has been a little off as I got told that my last ct scan came back with a little larger spot than did the one before...but not as big as last year! After my next scan the doc will decide if I have to go back for more chemo or if surgery would be a better option! Either way...we've done this already so it won't be a big deal! And hey! Going back for more chemo would give me the chance to go back and see all those great nurses on the ward! On the other hand I don't think the ct is until some time in December and what ever it is may be gone by then! We will just have to wait and see!And there are lots of kids out there with similar problems, and worse, whose life could be made a little brighter by having their families close by... so if it is possible for you... a donation to the Makers Care would go a long ways! Well that is what I remember anyway! It might even have been a ’38 Dodge... Then he carried four 3’ long dowels that were 1 1/2”thick in it. Wood Turning #118 Texted A Maple F_ _ _ _ Bowl The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2015-09-21 | People to thank are Malcolm ---And you see... I spelled it wrong in the video too!---and Jennifer for the maple and the idea and my Dad for the cedar!Well there were a few glitches along the way... and even now after it is all done... I find myself remembering things that I wanted to do!These were simple things like forgetting to let you know what it was! I was nearly finished the edit when I realized that I had gone to the great effort of drilling all those holes ... and then didn’t tell you why!There were things like the text I have been trying to put just before the Aftertalk. I remembered after one had been posted... but ... I thought... I’ll just pop it in the other one! Strange how the Aftertalk sign didn’t appear in either!You can tell by the much better green screening, that there have been advancements being made. Silly stuff... like paying all the attention to the green screen itself and forgetting that I would need some light on the subject too! As with everything else... you don’t learn it all at once! I appreciate that you have stuck with me through it!Now as far as the bowl was concerned!That one little crack... that was on the bottom... well the wood should have been worked from the other side! You see... when the bowl got down to the thickness that I wanted... that crack was visible from the top too! If I had put that crack on the “top” of the section.... I would have turned most of it away!Drilling... I used Forstner bits... and during the edit wondered why I hadn’t used spade bits! I have a great many more sized of them and I think they would probably have cut cleaner --- less burnt!--- holes! It was one of those things that I had in my head at the time though... so it was what got done!I was quite proud of the glue up of the bottom section! And I think I did a pretty good job of getting it down to the right size and everything... too bad I had left the camera on the counter! But all was not lost!... you see like I said ... I wanted the cedar sandwiched between the maple and so turned it with that in mind... I was thinking that the cedar could come out and cup the bottom of the bowl and give it a little more stability... After realizing my filming mistake... I also realized that the holes on the bottom of the bowl were much closer to the middle than I had thought! What’s a project without a few design changes along the way?Well that was a pretty fun little project and you see that my turntable is still in working order! Wood Turning #117 An Earthquake Detector you can make with a Pallet The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2015-09-07 | I guess that now I’ve said I “do” this I had better “do” it ... huh?Well here is a thank you to one of you... and if your name is Ron too... well thank you anyway! But Ron knows who he is and I do hope he and his wife enjoy their Earthquake detector for many years to come! I had a few issues along the way ... things like the ball at the top of the finial.... it was supposed to be the same wood ... but I made three balls from that and they all broke... so I went for a piece of the base! I think it works well! My camera angles for the base are a little lacking but at least it shows the top... the bottom I made a smooth dish like shape... I suppose you could turn it over and use it that way up if you got tired of it this way! All in all... a very fun project!So the end of another pallet season has arrived... I had a lot of fun with it and I’m sad to see it go... and there were a lot of really good entries into the challenge! I think my favorite was the Barbie picnic table! I really hope the randomizer picks the other people who entered! I think they all deserved to win! I mean... its all well and fine for me to say ... “This is what you are going to see today!” Of course if it’s not what you want to see... then you are not likely to watch!I am on the verge... at least I feel like I am... of figuring out the Facebook thing and am working on the best ways of going about a website! All things that I should have done a long time ago! Last time I checked, I had 4 shy of 4000 subscribers and I should be able to offer these features to you. To add ways that, what I have learned over the years might be of a benefit to someone who hasn’t asked those questions yet! Oh! And bear in mind that my verges... may still take a couple of months! Wood Turning #116 6 Texted Two Years (and a day!) in the Making The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2015-09-02 | 4QWell this was crazy! You will have seen at the end that I go around and shut off all the other cameras! This was going to be a nice easy sit down in front of the camera and talk! And that part went just fine! so then I wanted to put 3 different camera angles of the same thing... me - and in production it worked well ... that's just what I want! Render it into a video and something changes halfway through and nothing lines up any more! I started this at 9:30 yesterday morning! Here it is noon on the twoth and I am only now getting a version out! Get rid of all the different angles and just leave the basics! I guess that's all I needed to do in the first place... but you know how it is when you get an idea and you are pretty sure that it should work! Ah well!It still says thank you and that was the important part!So 4Q! I was wrong... I had expected 5! But I guess that if I really wanted people to read this I would say in the video somewhere ... hey read the description! But this also goes well with what I told a viewer not too long ago.... this whole channel is somewhat like a video diary! I can look back and see what I was up to at that time and then with the description I get the other side of what I was thinking!And here, on two years, I have lots to think about! But I can't think too far into the future... or it will just drive me crazy-er! But I do have to figure out ways of getting people involved in what I do as well as just watching it! Lots to think about and lots to learn!Should be another good year!Take careLarry

Wood Turning #115 A Pallet Spurtle in Walnut The Tiny Trailer Workshop 2015-09-01 | Spurtles are a fun turn and a very useful one too!In addition to stirring porridge I have found that they work exceptionally well for stirring natural peanut butter. The brand that comes to mind here is Adams... but I would imagine it is probably a North American variety! I am sure that it would work with any of them!I have decided that seeing as this is fairly short... and has a lot of text in it anyway.. I am only putting out the one video this time. For the viewers who like the uncluttered look of the non texted version... this video is an exception... and not the way things will remain!I want to thank Ron again for bringing me the pallet wood... awesome stuff!And I want to thank Sterling for putting the challenge on... and I also want to say that even though I am putting in multiple entries... it is not to try and get prizes... I would like to help Sterling achieve his hundred entries to help support the Wounded Warrior program. I don’t live in the States and this wouldn’t do anything for the guy up the street here...
