SUPER SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (2006) V1.0 ~ 10TH ANNIVERSARY FOR 06 MODDING!
updated
Those that've played this know that this is no cakewalk. This is painfully difficult to complete since the timer is going down by 10 seconds every lap, and every bit of timeloss WILL come back to haunt you in later laps...it's why I didn't complete this on my first initial playthrough back in 03/04 ish.
RC Cars, also known as Smash Cars for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 versions, is a vehicular combat game developed by Creat Games for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 2 in 2002-2003.
#rccars #smashcars #remotecontrolcars
So as the title suggests, the two games were released twenty or so years ago, seesh time flies. But the main reason I wanted to compare the two games was because of the fact that there are so many visual changes from course of RC Cars for PC, to its PS2 exclusive console counterpart a year later.
But more than that, RC Cars is more of an RC Car simulation of-a game, meanwhile Smash Cars, while more arcady with its tracks, is the more superior game, having more trick-oriented states, faster speeds etc
RC Cars doesn't have the ability to manipulate the RC Car in the air, while Smash Cars does. This is why there was a dedicated section of the game that gets the player to go through stunt tracks, basically to invite the player to perform back-flipping/somersaulting tricks, rewarding you with score and all. Even boosting seems slower in RC Cars compared to Smash Cars.
But even then, I was surprised to learn how much the tracks have evolved, a good example being the one in this video. It's more summertime akin to a beach setting with its textures and lighting. But in Smash Cars, they made it a bit darker, and greyed a lot of the textures, despite still being a bluey type of day setting.
So I'm glad we got the version we did on PS2. I'm not sure if I'd still be playing the game to this day if it was just RC Cars but ported for PS2. The physics were pretty much the same as what we eventually got on console, but the inability to steer the RC Car back on its tires when upside down, like I said, while more arcady, being able to do this in Smash Cars, really did make RC Cars more of a simulation to real life...for the most part anyway. (right teleporter? XD)
I'd like to make more of these since there are other tracks that've had this treatment dealt to em, but you guys need to let me know.

I actually maxed NSMB Wii out too, iirc before this, mainly cuz the infinite coin glitch freezing koopa built the score up much faster.
Gonna start uploading 10-yo-vids I've had from my camera roll on my old iPhone 4s, should be fun to see a contrast from then to now.

I still vividly remember watching this for the first time, feeling horse-struck that such a gameplay difference in speed and power in damage/infiniteness could be achieved, regardless if it was cheats or some other method. Try to remember that this was in an era where there were no fan patches, and no updates that attempted to fix/change elements of the game. The closest to this was the DLC making tails run a little faster, but since it only affected him, I get the feeling it was a coincidence or unintentional.
I really wasn't a fan of the speed that sonic made when you would jump from idle then move out of it, but this mod sped that up just a little. Not much, but I certainly noticed the change. And despite the amount of times I rewatched the original video ( youtu.be/_A9u7sjmXHQ ) I still wanted to play it. And for the next 3 years, I could only watch and see others try it, but it wasn't until a user by the name of CRASHICTH provided all the necessary tools and links in a video tutorial showing how to install the mod on hardware. Unfortunately all his 06 vids have been either privated or deleted due to a massive amount of people demanding the e3 demo from him when he made a joke post claiming to have it. It's for this reason that I won't link his current channel.
But man, I'm very grateful to his contributions, and ShadowLAG's. If it weren't for the both of them, I firmly believe that I wouldn't be anywhere near as involved as I am with PROJECT 06, or ChaosX. At most I might've been checking the YouTube updates, because while there are certainly other (unrelated to sonic) projects that I've had planned for years with where I'd like my career to go in the future, and am trying to balance time for 06 stuff and those other projects, 06 did inspire a few elements in my other projects, so the game certainly did have an impact on me, especially with who I'd play it with back in the day.
I know there were other mods around this time that could've been made before this ( https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0QsGODF7UNM/hqdefault.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEnCOADEI4CSFryq4qpAxkIARUAAIhCGAHYAQHiAQoIHBACGAYgATgB&rs=AOn4CLAY1K_Y6RWOjOQKdVf5G0WQ6Qze5g ) but this still goes down in 06 history as the very first released 06 mod. It's bizarre to compare this, or even use this with patches. Now a days we're in the territory of telling the ring counter to go down as super sonic, returning you to normal once on 0! It was a mere pipe dream 15 years ago, but how the mods have evolved is amazing simply put.
It's interesting too, because when I did my first coverage of this mod going back to 2015 ( youtu.be/CrxVwHyTimo ) according to other modders that are in the community patching the game now, they watched my super sonic vid and were inspired to want to dig into the game files to see what could be modded/fixed/restored. And that's pretty much exactly how it was for me, seeing ShadowLAG's vid and wanting to experiment with the files, or even in gameplay. So in more ways than one, this mod has inspired many, and I'm glad, cuz even 15 years later it definitely deserves the title, 'The First 06 Mod!'
It certainly took a while to grow an 06 modding community, but I'm very glad to've been apart of its conception, and I certainly wouldn't have been present back then if it weren't for this mod!
Here's to the next 15 years!! 🎉

I can’t recall if this actually was in the game at one point, but it certainly was intended to damage enemies, so it makes it that much more amazing we have this now! It’s starting to make more sense why an insane amount of speed the blue gem got in the xbla would’ve caused enemy damage.
I think what happened was they figured it was way too fast even if their maturity meter was programmed back then, so they slowed the speed down a lot, to the point that the damage seemed unjustified to have it for such speeds when you have a command to do damage while on the move and the ground already.
Not sure if it’s a hit box thing or if the damage states are programmed differently, but it is interesting to note that both the top and the lower searchlights of Genesis don’t take damage at all with this patch. I would’ve thought if anything boss silver would struggle, but quite the opposite interestingly.
This damage state lasts as long as the blue gem state is triggered, so as soon as the sound, particle, and speed cut out, and you can start steering around again, basically you’re vulnerable again if you’re still running toward an enemy, even if the momentum of the speed is still on the running speed.
It explains why the demo length was so much longer, not just letting the sound fully play and loop but also allowing the damage state to last a little longer.
I wonder if it would be necessary for the steer-lock when in the blue gem state to be disabled alongside this patch to allow the player to steer while in the state, cuz it’s not restrictive with retail speed, but you certainly have to make more of a conscious effort to when and where you trigger it if you want to damage enemies.
The best it worked for me when I was using it as I progressed and ignored the enemies, so that if they got in the way it was accidental success in a sense. I also advise using this with the remove-stumble-over patch since without it invites ALOT of stumbling if you touch a wall.
But yet another patch off the bucket list of things to fix in 06, another step closer to a more enhanced/p-06 equivalent mod in the original!
What’re you guys curious to see next for patches/mods?
Easily the highlight of the video is 2:21
Like SU, the idea of this patch was to skip frames upon lag instead of slowing the game down, as a result, here at least, it now is starting to feel like what the e3 demo did as far as the speedup-after-slowdown goes...course, this is still very different in the sense that it doesn't speed up after slowdown and doesn't even slowdown anymore, but instead skips frames.
This patch is just a test to clarify incase the title didn't spoil it already, a test I wanted to try on hardware for full effects, which is why things like dash panel clips or graphical changes may be spotted in the video on the right.
Thoughts? Do you think the speed-up-after-slowdown could be a restorable/recreatable patch?
Now as the title suggests, this patch is a test, a test I wanted to try on hardware for full effects, so please bare that in mind if you see gameplay behaviour seeming out of place in this video.
