Rockman EXE 5 - Team of Blues (JP) - Part 30 - Crossover Battle w/ @DjangoDX
updated
It even has the hilariously bad spawns that the MW version had. In Half-Life, you will spawn in one of the next 5 spawn spots placed in the map (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=121904692). So, I intentionally placed them next to each other to replicate the bad spawns. The result was that people often spawn in the same spots where they died. It's a joke, obviously.
Unlike other videos on YouTube with Crossover Battles side-by-side, the audio in this video prioritises whoever is going to win a match (and Boktai 2's audio when in menus). The loser's audio is reduced to 10%. You can tell which audio is dominant with a speaker icon being lit beside each POV. It's also properly synced via ffmpeg.
Participating in Crossover Battle is critical to 100% completion in both games. Both wins and losses score each side "Crossover Points", which the players can spend on exclusive content from the other game. In Boktai 2, it's so you can get the Rockman.EXE armours/protectors (which also recolour Django). In Rockman.EXE 5, it's so you can get secret chips like GunDelSolEX and Otenko.
Because I have game-clear saves for both the Japanese versions of Boktai 2 and Rockman.EXE 5, I wanted to get the Crossover content for both of them. So I handed my Boktai 2 save off to a friend of mine so he can face me in Crossover Battle. That friend's name? "Django"! I wish I was joking...

This is the first level. There are no real enemies. Think of it as a tutorial to demonstrate what the G-6155 Interceptor (the vehicle) is capable of doing. As each level goes by, there are upgrades that are unlocked for it. This can include offensive weapons (Machine Gun upgrades, Missiles, EMP, Railgun) or rear weapons (Smoke, Flamethrower). The gameplay isn't the fastest, but the goal is to give you the content in the highest quality possible.
I am also uploading levels of the Japanese release in parallel with this one. The playthrough of this level in the Japanese release is here: youtube.com/watch?v=BF6d7tTQjeg
Now before anyone goes and complains, the true 4K and 60 FPS only take place in-level. Menus, cutscenes, etc are all in 30 FPS. Menus with the FPS uncapped make everything go almost "too" fast.
Here's a list of changes to make the viewing experience better:
- Cutscenes were manually scaled to preserve their original aspect ratio
- Midway & Paradigm Intro Videos are 4:3 (1.33).
- Intro sequence and all mission endings are 48:25 (1.92).
- NOSTRA's video is at a true 16:9 aspect ratio.
- Properly separated 5.1 surround sound (After I enable it in sound settings @ 2:59) + Proper Stereo track mixed by hand.
- No audio clipping (Volume is intentionally set to 60% to give enough headroom)
- True 4K 3D rendered graphics + Widescreen Hack
- 60 FPS (Except in menus... Everything goes too fast)
- Toggleable Subtitles in 3 languages:
- US English
- UK English
- Japanese (NOSTRA Cutscene only, from the Japanese release)
Surround sound on the PS2 is a bit tricky, since PCSX2 doesn't support outputting it just yet. Though, when Surround is enabled in-game, a Stereo stream encoded with Dolby Pro Logic II is sent to the speakers. Dolby Pro Logic II was made to be split from Stereo to 5.1, so I got ffmpeg to split it for me. There's some cross-talk between the channels, but it works at least! And yes, YouTube now supports 5.1. That was a welcome addition by them. :)

8:02 NOSTRA Introduction
It's a shame that the only main difference in versions is the text (except the intro clip). All audio is in English. The saving mechanic is also a bit different. Notice the stuttering in the audio when it tries to access and write to the memory card. Another difference is that NOSTRA's introduction cutscene is in 4:3 aspect ratio here, showing more detail than the 16:9 cropped version that the US copy of the game had. Unfortunately, there are also subtitles baked into the video as well. I don't know if there is a raw version of this cutscene in its original 4:3 ratio but it'd be a nice find if so.
There is one other difference too. The US version's ISO is 1.81 GB while the JP one is 1.59 GB. This is because the JP version is missing one of the bonus videos.
I am uploading these gameplays in parallel with the English release. A link to a playthrough of this stage in the English release is here: youtube.com/watch?v=ZdiOaJu4Ce8
I'm uploading this playthrough to Nico Nico Douga as well. This exact video is on there via this link: nicovideo.jp/watch/sm36987851
I am uploading these gameplays in parallel with my releases of the US version. They are getting the same exact treatment in quality:
- 4K resolution (True Widescreen excluding menus and HUDs)
- 60 FPS
- Properly separated 5.1 Surround Sound with a manually mixed stereo mix
- Subtitles (where applicable)
