The Castlevania series has had a mixture of blockbusters and flops. Symphony of the Night is easily the premier of the entire series, gaining critical acclaim that has surpassed not only the games in this series but in almost all of gaming. 1997 was an iconic year in gaming which brought Final Fantasy VII, Mario Kart 64, Gran Turismo and Golden Eye. Having a graduation class like this makes this game earning the Playstation game of the year in 1998 all the more impressive.
