Dyson is shaking up dental care with a new $499 toothbrush that features a built-in camera and AI-powered water flossing.
The CameraJet, launched by Dyson on Tuesday, combines an electric toothbrush and flosser, equipped with a 100,000-pixel macro lens camera that analyzes 28 images per second to find gaps between teeth and fires a jet of mouthrinse to help clean those hard-to-reach spots.
Dyson’s founder and chief engineer James Dyson said, "Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth. We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque and how to improve cleaning performance while brushing.”
The device’s AI system, called Gap Optical Targeting, was trained on 470,000 dental images collected by Dyson over six years of development. When the brush detects a gap between teeth, it delivers a targeted burst of mouthrinse within 100 milliseconds. Users can connect the CameraJet to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to access live views, brushing insights, coverage maps and cleaning feedback through the MyDyson app, but Dyson says that no images are recorded or stored either on the product or in the cloud.
Engineered with an anti-gravity 12.5-milliliter rinse tank, the CameraJet dispenses mouthrinse at any angle and is refilled in three seconds with a docking station that also charges the device. Dyson says its conical fluid jet provides a wider, gentler cleaning area compared to traditional water flossers, which often only pierce plaque without removing it.
Every brush head includes an RFID tag so the device can track usage and let users know when a replacement is needed. The brush heads were designed with softer outer bristles, firmer inner bristles and sonic dampeners for quieter operation. The CameraJet uses variable sonic oscillation, varying the brushing angle to help keep the bristles in motion and prevent stalling, especially in difficult spots. External lab tests found the CameraJet can remove up to 69 percent more plaque than premium electric toothbrushes in hard-to-reach areas when used in variable mode.
Users can choose between auto-detect or manual jetting modes and adjust brushing intensity. There is a sensitive-bristled brush head option as well.
Dyson recommends using SLS-free and non-foaming toothpaste or mouthrinse with the CameraJet, as foam can interfere with the camera. Dyson is developing its own non-foaming toothpaste and low-foaming mouthrinse, specially designed for the device, with a release date to be announced.
The CameraJet comes in ceramic ultra blue and ceramic pink and includes two brush heads, a charging dock, a charging cable and a travel case.
