In just two months, the Hürtgen Forest has already devoured two entire American divisions. It’s November 1944, and German machine guns and artillery have turned fifty square miles of dense woodland into a nightmare terrain where tanks can't maneuver and air support can't penetrate the canopy.

Outside the village of Grosshau, men of the U.S. Army's 22nd Infantry Company B lie pinned against frozen mud. Three attempts to advance have already failed.

Private First Class Macario Garcia watches his squad flatten themselves deeper into the earth. Then, without orders and without backup, he rises from his foxhole and sprints directly toward the enemy guns.

Bullets kick dirt around his boots as he zigzags through the mist, his terrified squad watching him disappear into the swirling gray. Minutes tick by. His men were straining to hear anything over their hammering hearts.

Suddenly, a massive explosion tears through the pine trees, followed by rapid rifle fire. Then another blast that shakes the ground to its core. The German guns go silent - but so does Squad Leader Garcia.
