Customizing the Linux terminal is not rocket science. Almost all terminal emulators provide some degree of customization.
So, you can change the fonts, colors, transparency etc. You can also change the hostname and if you are feeling a bit geeky, you can also change the prompt to your liking.
I advise doing all this is a new terminal profile so that your customization experiments do not impact the default appearance of the terminal and you can easily get back to how it looked before.

The best thing about the method discussed here is that you can use the exact same Raspbian OS on the SSD. Your installed applications, configuration changes, custom settings, data remain as it is.
You switch to the SSD from SD Card but your system remains the same.
