For this dataset I simply did a cut and paste from NYT main web page:
nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html
Scroll down to the States table where the little colored strips to the right are (heat maps). Show all, then drag mouse to select all the rows and paste into Excel. It works surprisingly well, but you must clean it up and properly set the headers (videos shows this). The map was made in Tableau but relative area tends to skew the perception of the data (big states with fewer people get a lot of ink). Video shows also how to import and use a json file with similar data into Tableau.
