Did you know that you can do some fancy looking relief carving with just flat chisels? Well you can! It generally helps to have a few different sizes of bench chisels for this tutorial but I would definitely consider it a beginner woodcarving project.

My sister wanted a bird table and so I delivered, this was made completely from pallet wood and is a woodworking project you could complete in a weekend. Check out my Instructables page for more photos and description of the build.
This Wednesday, the 28th of June I shall be doing a live stream for the very first time. First of all Id like to mention the video that inspired my video, a bandsaw blade frame saw by Mike Sander - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O5tbt-RzBU
This is my twist on a Roubo Style Frame Saw, I think its fair to call it the poor mans style of frame saw because the total cost was around £45-50. You could make it for cheaper as well if you wish but I went for a mid range bandsaw blade rather than a cheap one. The joints are drawbore mortise and tenon with walnut (I think if I remember rightly) dowels and the frame itself is made from oak.
I dont think the way I fastened the blade was the best way but it was what came to my mind at the time. Im open to suggestions on what youd do differently and how youd improve upon the design. This build was completed entirely with hand tools.

This wood carved heart with initials is made from oak and all hand carved using around 5 or 6 chisels. Its a pretty relaxing thing to do and is a great way to practice wood carving and study grain direction. The oak really takes well to the tools and the carved letters stand out from a fair distance.
You could also paint the colours in if you wished or even paint the heart, maybe even texture it or add some other carved details. Theres many different ways you could go with a wood carving project like this and really youre only limited by your own mind.
