I love superheroes, and I love superhero video games. And while I love Spider-Man, Miles Morales, and Spider-Man 2 (and I'm VERY MUCH looking forward to Wolverine!), I wanted to call out five Marvel Comics based video games that I think are worth playing. Here's my list - what's yours?
CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE AVENGERS SNES/GENESIS/NES/ARCADE
Every version of this game - while maybe not aging gracefully - is fun to play. From the terrible broken english translations to the solid beat-em-up action (and lets not forget the BRILLIANT NES platformer!), this game is just a fun mindless lark to enjoy.
SPIDER-MAN N64/DREAMCAST/PSX
Our first 3D Spider-Man video game featured everything you needed - signature villains, a great display of super powers, fun web swinging and wall crawling action, and most importantly, a solid sense of humor.
MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 2 XBOX 360/PS3
You cannot go wrong with either Ultimate Alliance game or X-Men Legends games, especially if you're a fan of hack-and-slash Champions of Norrath style gameplay. Great cast of characters and awesome locations straight out of the comics make this a must play.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY XBOX SERIES X/PS5
Folks skipped this one because they were gunshy about how rough Avengers was, and they missed out. Some of the best writing I've ever seen in a superhero game, amazing visuals, fun combat, and the huddle mechanic gives you legit one of the greatest soundtracks ever assembled for a video game.
MIDNIGHT SUNS PS5/XBOX SERIES X
A compelling storyline and a fantastic pedigree of XCOM development coupled with a clever deck building combat system makes this not only one of my favorite Marvel games, but one of my favorite tactical strategy games. Wildly overlooked and a complete commercial flop, you NEED to track this one down.
