My best tips:
Make a few exceptions for yourself. Mine were plants and experiences.
Get rid of things throughout the year. You’ll feel more satisfied with what you have and probably find things you’d forgotten about.
Think about what you are getting instead of what you’re losing. For me, it’s creativity, contentment, less stress and better control of finances.
Feel free to keep a running list of what you want to buy but aren’t. Chances are, months or even days later, you won’t care about it anymore.
Build in an accountability person who can encourage you but also help make decisions if there’s something you aren’t sure is an essential.
