Karr the Mysterious, otherwise known as Charles Rowan, was a South African escape artist who achieved local fame in the 1920s and 1930s by mounting his own high-risk stunts, narrowly escaping death each time...

Not satisfied with the local fame he had achieved during the 1920s doing acts such as 8-foot jumps into piles of broken glass and escaping from straight jackets, Karr planned an especially dangerous stunt for his next performance. Even a local doctor was known to have: (QUOTE) “begged Karr not to proceed with the performance, but he insisted.”

In Springfontein, South Africa, Karr attempted to free himself from a straight jacket while a car drove straight at him from 200 yards at 45 miles per hour.

The time the magician would have to twist his way out of the straps and get away from the car would depend on the vehicle’s acceleration rate, which varied between 10 and 15 seconds.

But one second could make all the difference.

Kerr had often repeated the stunt, but during the live act he was a fraction of a second too late. Kerr got caught in the car’s right wheel, severely hurting his leg, and the car ran him over.

A Reuters article read: (QUOTE) “A ghastly death befell a traveling magician named Karr here this afternoon.”

Charles Rowan perished moments after the impact in front of a large audience, including children. But before he died, he exonerated the driver from any responsibility.
