One morning in 1993, a local Vietnamese farmer was making his way to his rice paddy when he ran into his wife and three children. The encounter was unexpected, as his family had perished during a massacre in 1968 when their village was attacked and their house burned down.
During what the Vietnamese remember as ‘The American War,’ many rural communities considerably suffered due to the conflict’s unforgiving brutality, and they found refuge in their faith and spiritual traditions.
Many places that witnessed fierce battles were believed to be inhabited by the roaming, grieving ghosts of those who perished. During the years that followed the war, many families reburied their loved ones in family graveyards instead of the shallow tombs put together in the past.
The local farmer’s wife was sitting on a rock when she appeared to him and gave him a scornful glance. The kids hid behind her, probably frightened their parents might get into some sort of fight. The apparition happened where their old house was located, and the villager took this as a sign that it was time to rebury his family’s remains.
The farmer immediately collected his savings from selling coconuts and even negotiated a loan with a neighbor. But suddenly a wealthy businesswoman that was related to his wife arrived from a distant city and offered him help with the costs.
On the day of the burial, the lady told the visitors that the family had appeared to her in her dreams, and the mother urged her to go to her home, giving credence to the old belief that the spirits remain here to help their loved ones with unresolved businesses.
