1. Plan Before You Plug
Before installing anything, look at your case’s cable routing cutouts, tie-down points, and PSU shroud space. Pre-route major cables (24-pin, CPU 8-pin, GPU) behind the motherboard tray before fully securing components. It’s much easier to manage cables when the case isn’t crowded.
2. Route Along Edges If Possible, Not Across Open Space
Cables should follow straight lines along the case edges and through grommets - never diagonally across the motherboard. Clean vertical and horizontal runs look intentional. Use the closest routing hole to the connector so the visible portion of the cable is as short as possible.
3. Separate Thick and Thin Cables
Run bulky cables (24-pin, PCIe, EPS) in their own paths. Bundle smaller cables (front panel, fan cables, RGB leads) together using Velcro. Keeping cable types grouped prevents bulges behind the motherboard tray and makes troubleshooting easier later.
4. Use the Right Fasteners (Don’t Over-Tighten)
Velcro straps are best for larger bundles since you can adjust them later. Zip ties are great for final tightening, but don’t crank them down too hard - especially on PSU or fan cables. Over-tightening can damage wires or make future upgrades frustrating.
5. Manage Cable Length Intentionally
Don’t stuff extra cable randomly behind the panel. Fold excess length neatly in a flat “accordion” or loop it in the PSU shroud area. If your PSU is modular, only use the cables you actually need. Less cable = cleaner build.
