Devan BumsteadIn this overview, I explain how our church utilizes ProPresenter 7's powerful feature set to format our text and graphic context for our in person service and our livestream simultaneously from the same computer. The challenge for us initially was to consume as few inputs as possible on our ATEM TV Studio HD video switcher while still giving us the ability to create beautiful and intricate lower thirds content. With this setup, we're able to do just that with using only 2 inputs on our video switcher, leaving the remaining 6 inputs for cameras.

Music (Admin. by Watershed Music Group)How To Reverse The Polarity of an IR (for a Dual Iridium Rig)Devan Bumstead2022-07-12 | One of the growing issues of amp simulation pedals is when paring Vox style and Fender style amps together, phasing issues occur. This can be corrected by using a dedicated piece of hardware like the DISO+ (with the upgraded polarity option) or by reversing the polarity on one of your two channels on your main sound board. However, doing this will often lock you intro having to use the same amp configuration for the duration of the performance. The good news is, if using pedals that utilize impulse responses (IRs) like the Strymon Iridium, there's a way to reverse the polarity of one of the IRs itself. This way, you can program your pedal(s) different ways to use the two amps throughout your gig without telling your sound tech to un-reverse the polarity of one of your channels!
IRs used for demonstration in this video are by David Hislop and Tone Factor: davidhislop.co/homeDevan Bumstead Live StreamDevan Bumstead2022-06-17 | ...UAFX Dream & Ruby VS Strymon Iridium (The Bethel Sound)Devan Bumstead2022-06-03 | This video features a side by side of the UAFX Dream (panned left) and Ruby (panned right), and the Strymon Iridium using David Hislop's IRs. The song in the demo is Alabaster Heart by Bethel Music.
Stay tuned, a follow up video is to come soon, but for now, this video provides a primer on the differences between these pedals.
For context, I carefully dialed in the Ruby and the Dream individually while reviewing Kenyon Reed's Electric Guitar Tone Building course on Production Online, matching the Dream to the tone of his Fender Prosonic and the Ruby to his AC306TB: productiononline.com/classes/electric-guitar-tone-building
I'm using the following IRs from David Hislop on the Iridium: L: DH 2X12 Green 545 3 R: DH 2X10 G10V 545 3 davidhislop.co/impulse-responses
Guitar: PRS Custom 24 Pickups: Lollar El Rayo's
I was using the following pedals on by board during this demo: Jackson Audio Prism (Transparent setting, Low mode | Set to unity gain and adding a touch of high end - tone at 1 o'clock) Jackson Audio Bloom (Magenta mode | Comp 100%, Blend 9 o'clock, Volume set to be level with bypassed signal) Klon KTR (Intro-Bridge 1 | Set to add 1 or 2 db and a touch of gain) Greer Lightspeed (Bridge 2 | Light gain | Stacked with KTR) JHS Kilt v2 (Instrumental | Red mode | Gain 9 o'clock, Tone 1 o'clock, Volume 4 o'clock) Strymon Timeline (Song specific presets from David Hislop) Strymon BigSky (Song specific presets from David Hislop) davidhislop.co/strymon
From the board into a Radial DI into an Apollo x8p into Logic Pro with no post processing.
If you've read this far you're likely seriously interested in this comparison. I'll have to say that right after recording this video, I thought the UA pedals were the clear winners. However, after spending a few days tweaking the Iridium, I'm not as convinced the UA pedals are "that" much better. The Iridium may not be moving after all.Hymn of Heaven (Homecoming) - Chorus 1 Electric Guitar - Bethel MusicDevan Bumstead2022-06-03 | This video is a quick take on how to play Chorus 1 (and subsequent Choruses with a slight modification) of Bethel's version of Hymn of Heaven in the key of Db.

Though there are many ways to do this these days, this is one way that may prove useful to those who already own an Apollo interface and the Antares Auto-Tune Realtime Advanced plugin. This same method can be applied to any UAD plugin, giving you a great way to add top of the line latency-free processing to a few of your channels live.

If you're looking into a livestream system that can process your audio like the pros do, look no further than Production Online, specifically Luke Hendrickson's Broadcast Template that our church uses every week: classes.productiononline.com/courses/luke-hendricksons-broadcast-audio-template?affcode=98710_ipr1sv3vBlessed (Acoustic Guitar Lesson) | Vertical WorshipDevan Bumstead2022-01-07 | Disclaimer: If this video plays in HDR, it's horrible. This brief tutorial is intended for the intermediate and above guitar player who simply needs a few pieces unlocked to be able to play this song effectively. It's not a thorough tutorial that covers the nuances in the whole song. That being said, I hope it helps you play this song! It's a gift to the Church!Rattle! • LIVE • Encounter Praise (feat. Devan Bumstead)Devan Bumstead2021-04-19 | This year for Easter our team decided Rattle! was on the menu. We loved leading this one and have been beyond blessed to leverage the team and tools God has provided to Newbury Park First Christian over the last few years. You can check out all of Encounter Praise's live videos here: youtube.com/channel/UCF7kBVIcOQLE4GoqGMhgrNA
From a production standpoint, though we're still learning and growing, we've been able to put together our livestream video and audio thanks to the wonderful people over at Production Online. Our small church of under 500 people is able to consistently put out high quality content to our livestream because of the Broadcast Template and video training resources you'll find there.
I don't believe there's currently a better solution out there to achieve a better mix for your stream. The audio you're hearing in this video was captured live into Logic Pro using Luke Hendrickson's Pro Template. Very minimal post-mixing and automation was done, and no other plugins were used except what came with the pro template. The magic is in the template itself!
If you're ready to step up your livestream audio, head over to Production Online and check out the template and all the other amazing resources!
A final shout out to CCI Solutions who recently helped us overhaul our entire AVL system in our Auditorium. Most certainly none of the livestream pieces could have been accomplished without their expertise. The Ultimate Worship Leader Kemper Rig...SOLD!Devan Bumstead2021-02-09 | Update: Sold Locally

Twenty twenty The year of the letdown The lockdown The anxious restless stressed out meltdown
A global discordant cacophony A sadistic symphony A poisonous polygamy of plague, prejudice, and polity
The perfect storm to dislodge our decency To stoke our differences from sea to shinning sea A viral medley so mysteriously infectious It’s both thieved us of life And inflamed all our factions
Red or Blue, left or right Pick your poison and plant your position Not in my life have I seen such conviction Over policy and public decrees Opinions aplenty, the truth so diseased
And to top it off, adding insult to discord, the rise of racial unraveling The renewed reality that skin-hate’s still breathing The reeking reminder that racism runs rampant The God image in all still classified and dismantled
What’s more, our isolation’s led to toxic meditations Our minds left to fester on social vacation Apart and alone we’re hungry for hope And in deep need of peace this season is no joke
So where does this leave us? On this starry night Near the end of this chapter but the end far from sight See I fear there’s a permanent impression this soul-deep recession will leave on our minds And I see seeds of doubt budding and running wild like fire
I echo the psalmist, King David who wrote: How long Lord? Will You forget me forever? Your face seems pretty well hidden and my religion doesn’t seem to make this any better
I’m tryin Lord, I’m tryin’
So help me!
Help me consider that Your ways aren’t my ways Good days and bad days are filled with You always
I know that I know that I know that
To this I will appeal For there’s a separation in what I know and what I feel So let’s rehearse the truths we know to be real:
The God of the sun is also the God of the rain The God of the winter is also the God of the spring The God of the healing is still God in my pain And the God of the past is still the God of today
Listen, this struggle isn’t new, in fact it’s why He came Not to erase all pain (that’s the end of the game) but to enter our mess Not to dry all our tears but to cry with us
That’s the Christmas story Not of a God so high and mighty So removed that He rules so blindly He’s not a King who commands out of selfish ambition Not of greed for some riches or rank or position
Don’t be mistaken, He’s a God MOST worthy But didn’t Lord it or leverage His authority
Instead He set aside all that glory and came undercover Born disguised as a slave to serve like a brother To feel the world and see the night turn to day To feed the poor and heal the souls He had made
So to all those who wonder where God’s been at I’m confident you’ll see in the near days you’ll look back That He’s been smack dab right there in the middle of your tracks He’s with you, I’m tellin’ ya If you’re gonna believe one thing, believe that
What the psalmist forgets (or had yet to experience) Was Emmanuel’s grand plan to love man so furious See He stepped off that throne and into the mud What kind of God does that? What King ever would? But He did and He still does and He’s right here among us Especially right now on the eve of this Christmas
So fling wide your hope and let His presence sink deep And restore your belief that His promise never sleeps God is not dead nor does He flee When the hellish tide rises it will be met with defeat
I’m gonna say it now and you’re gonna sing it soon And when you do I pray your peace is fully renewed
May His favor be upon you for a thousand generations And your family and your children And their children and their children
May His presence go before you and behind you and beside you All around you and within you He is with you He is with youChrist Be Magnified (Encounter Praise) EG2Devan Bumstead2020-11-19 | Instructional video for Encounter Praise's version of Christ Be Magnified. I send 2 of my 4 available SDI ports on the DeckLink to the ATEM and am able to send a "key" and "fill" signals to the switcher which allows me to send perfectly transparent lower thirds content as well as full screen content at my discretion using the DSK in the ATEM. This is accomplished by making thorough use out of the "Looks" feature in PP7. Here's my more recent video detailing our new rig:
Alright my tech people, I've got a solution and a question for y'all.
Quick gear list: iMac 27" Retina 5k 2017 | ProPresenter 7 | Blackmagic ATEM TV Studio HD Switcher | NDI Output | Wirecast Pro | AJA T-Tap | Decimator MD-HX
Big goals: 1) Have my primary ProPresenter 7 computer handle nearly all of the media and lyrics for both FOH and streaming. 2) Accomplish this by only using using 1 or 2 HDMI inputs on the switcher. Only one would be amazing, 2 is acceptable, 3 stinks.
I'm currently able to send a master output from ProPresenter 7 to the ATEM so that media shown in the Auditorium can also be shown online.
My second available screen connected to the Mac is my stage display.
I'm sending a third output via NDI for the lower third lyrics. These are formatted with a theme that is only applied to that NDI output so whenever the media tech fires the lyric slides as they normally would during a service, a secondary lower third format gets sent via NDI (many other videos exist on how to do this).
From there, the NDI goes to another computer on our network running Wirecast Pro which receives the NDI and then puts it back OUT via an AJA T-TAP Thunderbolt to HDMI/SDI converter.
I feed this signal into the switcher for my lower thirds input. As of right now, this is the ONLY thing that I will use Wirecast for...so it's taking up a whole computer and expensive software to do a relatively simple task. New solution needed!
From there, I assign this input to the Downstream Key (DSK1) in the ATEM and set the fill and key source to that input. This uses a luma key which takes the black background and makes it transparent, effectively separating my lyrics and I'm able to keep the lyrics on top of the videos switching in the background.
I do the same thing for other media images I want to display ONLY for the stream and not in the Auditorium using the media pool connected to DSK2.
Question: Would a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Monitor work with ProPresenter as a third output? If so, I'd need to free up one of my two Thunderbolt 3 outputs. So I'd maybe have to buy something like the CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock so send both of my HDMI outs to the front and back screens. Would my computer be able to handle this third output?
Or should I simply buy an NDI to HDMI converter and call it good?
Or is there another solution I'm not thinking of?NPFCC Livestream Rig Tour (March 2020)Devan Bumstead2020-03-18 | EDIT (April 2021): This video was created at the beginning of the pandemic. Our night of worship was a special evening for our church as it served as a culmination and celebration of our Press On campaign--a fundraising effort to replace our AVL (audio, video, and lighting) infrastructure in our main auditorium. This spoken word was written specifically for this moment in the service with this larger purpose in mind.

Let there be no confusion among us tonight No dilution of the pure substance of our delight
We are not here to entertain or perform But rather draw near to His reign and conform
Our songs, though potent with purpose, are still but a vapor, Compared to weight of His worth, just a match to some paper Gone in a flash, finite and fragile, small and unstable Like just one grape at the feast on a King’s table
No lyric is worthy enough No voice is pure enough No drum beat is big enough to ascribe Him the honor He’s due
Is he worthy? Why is that even a question? The question should be “Is He worth me?”
But note who He chooses to use for this purpose Take another look at who He moves for His service
That’s right, you and I Songwriters and scribes Trying to capture His Highness in a 3 minute rhyme
We are but nothing, from dust we were born Subjects to His dominion, not heirs to adorn Yet we hold the pen and at great risk He authors His story through children and mothers and fathers
We’re family, so we know it’s not ours, we give what we’ve gotten From Spirit-filed saints we pass on what’s not rotten
And boy are our spoils not spoiled We’ve been blessed, am I right? What’s been passed on to us makes the future shine bright
It’s a story that’s tried and that’s true One that can’t die and one that’s not through So tonight, this is our story, this is our song We will praise our Savior all the night long
Of course this is all way more than just music For a song in itself are just notes from a human But ours is much different—it’s a conduit of connection Through verses and bridges He dwells through each section
So if we encounter His presence through the praise we extol We better make way for His home to lay claim to our souls
You see, The birthplace of worship is awe and it’s wonder But blossoms and grows to wholehearted surrender
So let’s make a choice to return to our knees To worship His worthiness and give everything
Since nothing could stop His love from invading And no sin’s ever silenced His heart palpitating Let’s open the gates and draw near to His throne As children we’re His and He calls us His own
I can hear it now, the beat of His affection Colliding on this place like a holy infection
The transplant’s-a-comin’—His heart will be mine When Love is made known, what great things we will find Because one thing we do—forget what’s behind Let’s reach for the goal, toward Heaven we’ll climb
‘Till the day we rise up by His resurrection might We press on to the end with our hope—Jesus ChristMartin 000C-16RGTE Demo (Anthem vs. C414)Devan Bumstead2019-05-10 | This is a demo of the L.R. I made this quick and dirty for my players at NPFCC but if it can be of any benefit to you then great! We do this tune in the key of A instead of B so some of the parts are adjusted to fit that. When I refer to EG1 and EG2 this is in relation to the multitrack parts. But one guitar player could play most of both of these parts.Deep Cries Out VBS 2018 Hand MotionsDevan Bumstead2018-07-29 | These are the hand motions we taught the kids for our 2018 VBS.Zeal VBS 2018 Hand MotionsDevan Bumstead2018-07-29 | These are the hand motions we used for Zeal for our 2018 VBSTremble VBS 2018 Hand MotionsDevan Bumstead2018-07-29 | These are the hand motions we made for "Tremble" during our 2018 VBS. I'm engaging in a new pedalboard build which has required me to make custom length midi cables. I purchased the Switchcraft right angle midi plugs (model 05DL5MX) from Redco Audio and I'm using Mogami W2948 cable.
Below are the links to the parts and a written description of the steps I followed to make the cables. Because the parts are quite small, it can be a challenge to solder up one of these plugs but if you follow this little trick you should be good!
1. Strip back 1” of the wire 2. Put the black sleeve of the plug and heat shrink on wire 3. Cut back 2/3 of the grounding wire 4. Strip all the wires a tiny bit 5. Put on gold sleeve 6. Twist and straighten all wires 7. Tin all wires 8. Fill the midi plug points with solder 9. Melt solder in contacts and insert tinned wires, one at a time, when liquefied. * 10. Put on heat shrink and sleeve 11. Orient plug correctly & screw it back together!
* This really is the main trick. I'd suggest going clockwise, hold the colored wire in your left hand and the iron in the right. Touch the lug on the midi connector with the iron and then touch the wire to the lug. When both parts melt, insert the wire down into the small shaft. Remove the iron quickly and let the solder solidify.Adoption Update & Support (Baby Bum #3)Devan Bumstead2017-05-27 | Friends! We are sooooo close to wrapping up this stage of our adoption journey and wanted to give a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who have been so generous in getting us to this point! Your prayers are literally what has moved mountains and kept things moving along so smoothly. For those who have given financially we just want to say that your gifts so far have gotten us almost all the way to the finish line! We are BLOWN AWAY by your generosity! For all those just jumping in on this story, we still have a bit more to go if you'd like to help. We are so close to our goal and you could help us get all the way there. If you'd like to donate please contact us directly and we'll point you to the right place to give.
Our current prayer requests revolve around the remaining legal steps needed for us to actually be cleared to fly back home! Until those steps occur we're stuck on the other side of the country! God has been moving like a wildfire so far and we anticipate Him continuing to do just that! So your prayer partnership is invaluable!
Thank you so much again!!!!!!The Bumsteads Adoption JourneyDevan Bumstead2017-04-01 | Adoption has forever shaped our story. God has used it in our lives to draw us into a pattern of trust that has strengthened our faith and called us to take bold risks for the Kingdom. God is moving yet again and beginning a new chapter. But in order for Him to do this we have to again let go of control and take a big blind step of faith. Though we can't see very far ahead, we're trusting God with every step and that's the very place He wants us to be.
This story has marked the beginning of a movement called Adopt Hope. Though it's still in the early stages, we're confident God is using it already to be a blessing to many others in the near future. For more information and to donate, head to devanbumstead.com/adopt-hopeHoly Album Update & SupportDevan Bumstead2016-09-29 | Friends and Fam! YOU ROCK!! Thanks a billion for all your love and encouragement throughout this process. I can't believe it's almost here! And still, I'm getting many asking, "How can I help?" WOW! I'm blown away by your generosity. And indeed, there are some ways you can help.
1. PRAY!!! This whole endeavor falls on the shoulders of the Spirit of God so pray for a release of His presence in these songs and the stories that surround them. Pray for protection for my family and for wisdom, inspiration, humility, and freedom of fear.
2. SHARE! The most helpful thing you can do is to simply share the album with your friends and community. Send them an iTunes link, share a post from my Instagram or Facebook page, or just straight up mail them a copy of the album!
3. DONATE! This one's huuuuuge but never expected. But if you want to help out and give above and beyond the CD, I'd be most grateful. This really is the only way I can gain back some of the necessary equipment to continue the songwriting and recording journey and ensure that the ministry will continue. Partnering in this way means the absolute world to me!How to Sync Metronome and Synth Arps & Delays in MainStage (Part 2)Devan Bumstead2016-04-20 | See my previous video (Part 1) for more context on my goals and previous attempt to reach them. So far, this is a workable method! With two buttons I can go to a specific song in the set and fire the click/loop. The keyboard patches sync beautifully and the built in metronome follows my click/guide files perfectly.
The only thing that still is an issue is the spillover. When I change patches while holding a chord, the sound does carry over...until I hit the play/stop button to fire the click, then it kills the patch! If this didn't kill the patch it would be a really nice way to transition between song.
Anyone know of a way to enable spillover when hitting play? How to Sync Metronome and Synth Arps & Delays in MainStage (Part 1)Devan Bumstead2016-04-20 | MainStage Community,
My main goal is to be able to fully sync my keyboardists patches within MainStage in regards to arpeggiated patches and patches with delays. I don't just want the arp patches to play at the same bpm as the song (that would be easy enough) but I want them to fully lock in with the bpm so that if the player's timing is a little off, the arp still fires with the global bpm of the song.
In Omnisphere (where most of our arp sounds come from), under the "ARP" category, I changed the setting under the "Trigger" option to "Song Position" and that locks the arp with the global bpm, no matter how off your actual timing is.
But the only way this will work is if the rest of the band is playing with this metronome as well! And, again, this would have been easy enough just to assign one button to the global "Play" control to fire the metronome and then just change the tempo for each song...
HOWEVER, what if I ALSO want to fire a TRACK along with the metronome for each song???
This is where it gets fun!
So here's what I did: 1) I made 3 buttons in my Layout that will start/stop each song in the set. I assigned each button to a pad on my keyboard. 2) I created 3 channel strips on the concert level and put Playback instances on each of them. I loaded in my three tracks to each of them separately. I made sure each instance of Playback was in a different "Group" so that two of them didn't fire at the same time. 3) I set up 3 patches, one for each song. I put the desired keyboard sounds in each patch. 4) I made sure that each song was assigned the specific tempo by changing it in the "Attributes" for that song. This tempo matches the exact tempo of my click/loop track that's loaded in each instance of Playback. 5) I then mapped button 1 to start/stop the first instance of Playback. I created a parallel mapping on that same button to start/stop the global metronome.
Lo and behold, everything works!! ALLLMOST! The button is a little weird. Sometimes the track that I loaded in Playback won't fire but the global click will fire every time. Then, when I hit the button again, the Playback track will start and join the metronome...IN TIME! So that's a good thing but it means I have to hit the button twice every time I want to fire a song? Seems I'm missing something.
What settings should I be using maybe for the button itself inside MainStage?New Life [Lyric Video]Devan Bumstead2016-03-15 | "New Life" is a song about the gift of new life we receive when we are in Christ.
