– Hybrid training is a new, in some way controversial, method of training. Athletes want to excel at both ends of the fitness spectrum - excellent conditioning and ability to do very heavy lifts.
In this video I will lay out the case why hybrid athletes can never become specialists in either modality. Not to discredit any of the hybrid performances - I actually think they are super impressive athletes - but rather to give you some perspective on the biochemical processes that happen inside the muscle when you train opposite modalities in the same session or within the same day.
Nearing the end of the video, I dive deeply into training volume and specificity—two key aspects that influence performance across different types of hybrid athletes, such as those in Hyrox, CrossFit, and pure hybrid disciplines. I also compare these factors with those seen in specialists, like cyclists and professional powerlifters.

– Injuries in high-intensity sports, such as CrossFit, are relatively common. But just how common are they, and how do the odds compare to those in other sports?
In this video, I discuss a new study on injuries in CrossFit. German researchers surveyed over 300 athletes of various ages and skill levels about their injury rates during CrossFit training. The data revealed that barbell exercises, box jumps, and pull-ups were most commonly associated with injuries among CrossFit participants. Additionally, research by Miwais Mehrab and colleagues indicates that a sudden increase in training load is the most significant factor in causing injuries in high-intensity sports. –

#crossfitThe Physiology of the Muscle Pumpwod-science2024-04-30 | Have you ever "chased the pump" at the gym? Arnold Schwarzenegger famously described the sensation of the pump as "blood rushing through your muscles" back in 1977 in the documentary "Pumping Iron."
With the advent of new wearable technology, we can now precisely measure blood pooling in specific muscle groups. In this video, I conduct a small case study using push-ups and dips to maximally exhaust the triceps and chase "the pump." I will demonstrate how the pump works from a physiological perspective.
#pump #wearables #physiologyHow Blood Flow Impacts Handstand Push-Upswod-science2024-04-24 | Struggling with Handstand Push-Ups during workouts?
In this video I explain why blood flow distribution impacts oxygen delivery to the muscles during CrossFit workouts. Being upside-down makes it harder for the heart to deliver blood to the working muscles in the shoulders.
I give you two concrete tips on how to use this information to improve your ability to move upside down during functional fitness movements under high intensity.

#crossfit #wearables #physiologyA New Fasted Training Method That Can Make You Faster? (4 studies explained)wod-science2024-04-20 | In this video I dig into the science on fasted training. I explain why ‘regular’ fasted training prepares the muscle to burn more fat, but that it does not necessarily lead to better performance on the bike or during a run.
There is however a more ‘extreme’ form of fasted training, coined ‘sleep low’. Using this protocol you push the system to training in extreme low glycogen states. When done well, it does seem to improve overall exercise performance.

#fasted #trainingHeart Rate is NOT Ideal for Measuring Intensity in CrossFit - Here is WHY!wod-science2024-04-16 | Heart rate monitors are the simplest, cheapest and arguably the most reliable tool to measure intensity during endurance exercise.
But functional movements under very high intensity are different.
In this video I will do a small experiment to show that heart rate is a suboptimal, even an ineffective method to measure workout intensity, depending on which movement the athlete is doing. I will demonstrate better methods to check hybrid training intensity with the latest wearable tech.

But what is ‘long’ and what is ‘short’, and is this for everyone the same?
In this video you will find out how to determine YOUR optimal resting time using the newest wearable technology (Near Infrared Spectroscopy, NIRS). Learn about muscle oxygenation and how it can boost your training efficiency.
