Hydrogen & EVs with Paul Martin - Spitfire Research Electric Vehicle Society 2023-03-08 | In this episode, we explore the challenges of using hydrogen as a fuel in vehicles and other applications.Hydrogen and its viability in transportation as well as other sustainable energy applications, continues to be topic of debate. While the debate continues, vast sums of money, mostly tax dollars, are being provided to fund hydrogen projects here in Canada and around the world. Hydrogen proponents tout the fact that it burns without producing any Co2 or pollution and is the most abundant element in the universe. Its detractors point out that hydrogen does not exist in a pure state and must first be extracted from its source and converted to a usable form. Costs and inefficiencies surrounding this extraction process are among the reasons hydrogen has yet to play any significant role in sustainable transportation. Paul Martin is a Canadian chemical engineer with decades of experience making and using hydrogen and synthetic gas. His keen interest in EVs and the electric transition has been earned honestly- he converted a 1975 Triumph Spitfire to fully electric in 2014, and then did the same in 2020 with a 1973 TR6. Paul is a chemical process development specialist offering services to an international clientele via his private consultancy, Spitfire Research. Mining Sustainably for EV Materials with Dr Nadia Mykytczuk of Mirarco Electric Vehicle Society 2022-12-07 | As EV battery metal demands are set to grow several fold in the coming decades, our ability to meet those demands with current mining levels, is not yet possible. What alternative sources of battery metals can we add to our supply chain and how quickly? Dr. Mykytczuk addresses this question while focussing on non-traditional sources of metal supply; specifically looking at mine wastes, called tailings. She will look at technologies available to extract battery metals from waste using biotechnology; a low energy, low cost alternative that can make these wastes and economical source of battery metals for our electrification supply chain. " Dr. Nadia Mykytczuk is currently serving as the CEO and President of MIRARCO (Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation) in Sudbury, ON. She also serves in the role of Interim Executive Director of the Goodman School of Mines at Laurentian University. Until May 2021, she was an Associate Professor and Industrial Research Chair in Biomining, Bioremediation, and Science Communication at Laurentian University. She continues to operate her research lab and supervise graduate students as part of her ongoing research efforts to expand biotechnology applications in mining. She is currently working on the development of a new Centre for Mine Waste Biotechnology that will be focused on extracting metals, including battery elements, from mine wastes in a low-carbon, environmentally sustainable way.
