Basel is a major hub for freight imported, exported and passing through Switzerland. It mostly follows the Rhine river, either travelling to the left of the Rhine (through France), to the right (Germany) or directly on it to the ocean.
We’ve looked at the line to Germany in the past and will see more in the future, but in this video, we’re going to see the route that trains heading to France take, to the first station over the border. The interesting thing about this line is that it was the first railway line in Switzerland. The French had finished their line from Strasbourg to St. Louis in 1840 and wanted to continue it to Basel. Finally in 1844, the first train station in Switzerland was opened in St. Johann, outside of the city walls, then in 1845 a special gate was built into the city walls for the railway, which ended where the university children’s hospital is situated today (UKBB).
In 1860, the line was connected to that of the Swiss network roughly where Basel SBB is today - although back then it was straight. Today, the station looks like a croissant from the air, as the tracks towards France were diverted away from the middle of the city in 1901, where the level crossings were restricting traffic.
The old railway viaduct now serves as a bridge for the main road and a tram line. Tram line number 1 follows the path of the former railway line to the St Johann station.
Seeing as it's only a short video, I decided to include a little map in the corner to see how people like it. It probably wouldn't be fitting for a longer video - but let me know your thoughts.

This trip takes us on a side line of the SBB that weve partially seen in the opposite direction: (https://youtu.be/Mb_QnYpRdRk?si=sV3J1kWXLinQ88ld). We start in the city of Baden in the canton of Aargau northwards via Koblenz and via the Rheinbrücke opened in 1859 to the German Waldshut. The Rheinbrücke was the first connection between the German Rhine railway and the Swiss rail network.
Today, the bridge over the Rhine is one of the few remaining lattice girder bridges (if not the oldest) in all of Europe. Since April 2023, it has been closed due to restoration work, which are scheduled to by finished by December 2025.

The Bellinzona to Mesocco railway line had a turbulent history, and it would go beyond the scope of this publication to recount the entire story. Ultimately, the Società Esercizio Ferroviario Turistico (SEFT) operated a heritage railway from Castione-Arbedo to Cama until 2013. SEFT was unwelcome to the regional authorities, so the heritage railway unfortunately had to cease operations in 2013, and the tracks were dismantled. Only a few stations and viaducts now serve as reminders of this charming heritage railway.

Todays video will take us along the Grande Ceinture line of Paris, a circular line around paris, linking its 6 major railway stations. Well accompany a train of engines during a locomotive exchange between the Villeneuve-Saint-Georges depot and the Achères depot.
We covered part of this line in a previous video (https://youtu.be/xQYHt-NL8FM?si=KViCzklzvCPpJkR7).Today, well be seeing a larger portion of it.
157 km long, this line connects the various networks (west, north, east, southeast, and southwest) and is used primarily by freight trains, although it is no longer fully operational. Along the way, well pass through various stations on the various networks served by the RER and Transilien (commuter train) lines, and will also follow the recently completed T11 tram-train line between Epinay-sur-Seine and Le Bourget stations.

In this video, were looking at an important line in Poland, the line connecting Berlin with Warsaw. We start at the German border town of Frankfurt an der Oder, not to be mistaken with Frankfurt am Main across the other side of the country.
The line from Frankfurt to Poznań (or Posen in German) was opened in 1870 and was entirely within the then German empire, which included the Prussian regions of present day Poland. After World War I, the line became partially Polish (a few stations after this video ends) and following World War II, the border was moved to the Oder river, which we cross at the start.

The Chemin de fer du Jura (CJ) is one of the private railways in Switzerland that operate both narrow-gauge and standard-gauge lines. The standard-gauge line from Porrentruy to Bonfol in northwestern Switzerland belongs to the CJ but is now used by SBB trains. Previously, until 1965, French passenger trains (French Autorails) continued along the line via Pfetterhouse to Dannemarie in France; the French section was finally closed in 1970.
Well be revisiting this line in the future in 4K. It has since been completely renewed, with individual signals for the respective tracks at stations, higher platforms and a larger, central freight station.

This meter-gauge branch line of Transports publics Neuchâtelois (transN) connects the village of Les Ponts-de-Martel, situated in a high valley, with the Neuchâtel city of La Chaux-de-Fonds. TransN operates three other lines, one of which is the standard-gauge Travers – Buttes line. The departures are always interesting, especially if you are lucky enough to see all four trains (two SBB trains, one CJ train, and one transN train) leaving La Chaux-de-Fonds station simultaneously.

In this video, were taking a train loaded with diesel to a tank farm in Kreuzlingen, in north eastern Switzerland, right on the border with Germany. Well be driving along the Rhine (Switzerlands northern border to Germany) to Eglisau, utilising a beautiful line that hasnt been regularly used for passenger trains in over 30 years.
After passing through the hub of Winterthur, well continue through Frauenfeld through Weinfelden to Romanshorn on the lake of Constance, before following the lake to Konstanz itself, which were passed through recently from the other direction (https://youtu.be/HQiko_wlbw8).
Konstanz is interesting, because its partially still on the Swiss side of the Rhine, yet belongs to Germany.
The InterRegio service from Zürich to Konstanz takes a more direct route via Berg, which we will look at in a coming video. We take the long route today due to the weight of our train and the steeper gradients on the more direct route.
I decided to include detailed signal information in this video. It took about an additional 12 hours of editing, so Id be interested to hear your thoughts and whether it is worth the effort to continue this way in future videos. Note, the text in German above the signals is mainly directed at train drivers who might be watching the video to get to know the line and basically notes which signals are entry Einfahrt, intermediate Abschnitt, exit Ausfahrt, crossover Spurwechsel, Cover Deckungssignal and block signals.

The Gotthard railway was a big feat for Swiss pioneers. It was the first north - south alpine crossing through the Swiss alps, directly linking the Italian canton of Ticino with the rest of Switzerland. Until the base tunnel was opened, it was the shortest trade route between north western Europe and Italy - a corridor of international freight and passenger traffic.
The line was originally designed for steam operation. In 1913, the second transalpine railway was opened from Frutigen to Brig, known as the Lötschberg railway. This was electrified from the start - which was very early compared to the rest of Switzerland and Europe. The SBB also decided to electrify the Gotthard line in order to be less dependant on the availability of coal - which was much harder to attain during the wars.
Electrification was completed in 1922, with power supplied by the SBBs own hydroelectric power stations in Ritom and Amsteg. Electric traction allowed trains to pull ever increasing loads at higher speeds as the technology of locomotives progressed. Locomotives like the legendary Swiss crocodile were developed especially for duties on the Gotthard railway. The BLS and SBB broke a number of world records with the powerful locomotives they developed, together with the Swiss machinery industries such as SLM, BBC, MFO & SAAS, some of whom would go on to form ABB, an industry leader in advanced machinery and electrical equipment today.
The old Gotthard line has been somewhat empty since the base tunnel was officially opened in 2016. Most trains do and many must take the base tunnel due to weight, height or time restrictions. There are some exceptions such as gravel trains, which must use the mountain route because of issues with the dust they would leave in the tunnel.
