![I Built an Apocalypse Radio with NO Internet and NO LoRa.
A zero-configuration, off-grid communication device that enables instant serverless Morse code chatting over long distances using ESP-NOW.
Morse-Link is a serverless, hardware-based communication platform engineered for pure decentralized messaging. By leveraging the ESP-NOW [LR PHY] protocol, this project enables reliable long-range communication entirely independent of cellular networks, Wi-Fi access points, or external servers. Designed with a zero-configuration, pairing-free architecture, devices instantly discover and transmit Morse code messages across decentralized nodes, making it a robust solution for off-grid communication and infrastructure-free field deployments.
While LoRa and ecosystems like Meshtastic are undoubtedly the gold standards for long-range off-grid communication, Morse-Link was born out of a different challenge: How far can we push decentralization using only standard Wi-Fi hardware? Instead of relying on extra RF modules, this project explores the absolute limits of a bare-bones ESP-NOW setup—proving that you can achieve incredible infrastructure-free range with zero pairing, zero apps, and just a single chip.

![Offline MAP, GPS Tracker with E-Paper Display | Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W Portable Map Project
In this project, I built a portable offline GPS tracker using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, a 7.3-inch color E-Paper display, and a GPS module. The system runs entirely without WiFi or cellular — just preload the map and go!
You can use this project for hiking, biking, travel, or any outdoor adventure. It’s battery-powered, sunlight-readable, and fully open source. I walk you through the entire process: from setting up the Pi, connecting the GPS and E-Paper, to mounting everything on a wooden board for portability.

About the build (ESP-Hi)
ESP-Hi is a ultra-low-cost conversational robot dog built on the ESP32-C3. Paired with a large language model (e.g., Xiaozhi AI), it supports natural, real-time dialogue. A mercury switch handles vibration wake-up and motion cues, while a 0.96-inch color display shows expressions. The robot performs 12+ actions. By leaning on the ESP32-C3’s built-in peripherals, it achieves audio capture and speech output with minimal extra hardware. Firmware-level optimizations reduce RAM/Flash usage so wake-word detection and multiple peripheral drivers run reliably in a tight resource budget.

Slint is a declarative GUI toolkit to build native user interfaces for desktop and embedded applications written in Rust, C++, or JavaScript.
From a developers perspective, its good to have a variety of GUI toolkits. I think we can expect more features and improved performance through competition. In commercial projects, both LVGL and Slint require licenses, so this is an issue that must be considered separately from development.
