In the last six months we’ve traveled through 14 states that have shaped countless adventures. But countless adventures also equate to limitless highway miles between destinations and what often feels like perpetual rush. Rush to walk the dogs, to eat dinner, and to find a safe place for the night. Rush to fill our water or dump our water, to grocery shop and fill up gas. Rush to come up with new video ideas, to plan, execute and edit those videos… And in all of that rush, we typically find ourselves blowing passed small towns while cruising on major roadways, sometimes missing whole regions of the states we visit. And sometimes we worry that we could be missing out on a lot of fun opportunities that we could only find by slowing down, talking to locals, and wandering around. So, for this video, we decided to do things a bit differently. We took our friend Brian up on his offer to venture over to the northwest, to the state of Washington, and participate in a little adult scavenger hunt. To slow our roll and visit some of the smaller destinations outside of the Seattle area. First, it involves the highest peak in the entire state of Colorado, Mount Elbert, and second, it involves my sister Brenda! Also, this is me, Julie talking. Ben, Brenda, and I drove out to San Isabel National Forest where we camped in the van for a night. Yes, three people and three dogs in the van. It’s a new record!We ate mac n cheese and tacos, watched a movie, and hit the hay early. The next morning we got up before the buttcrack of dawn, at 3 am to set out on the grueling 10 mile hike to the summit with 4,500 ft elevation gain. It was a beautiful, exhausting, and rewarding journey. And one my sister said she will NEVER do again. All three dogs made the journey with us, and really handled it much better than we did. Well the cats outta the bag this week as we experience something pretty remarkable, life with the Onaqui wild horses. About 60 miles southwest of Salt Lake City lives one of the last remaining herds of wild mustangs in Utah. We drove the van down the 15 ish mile gravel stretch from Vernon to Simpson Springs, known as the Pony Express Rd. It offers a unique viewing window into the lives of some 100-120 stallions, mares, and occasionally foals. We camped out on BLM land and spent the better part of three days just admiring and filming the herd. You can visit the herd yourself if you’d like, but always keep in mind a few things:Never chase, attempt to feed, or pet a wild horse. These are wild animals, and they can kick with a speed of 200 mphNever get between a stallion and his mares, aka his ladies, or a mare and her foal aka baby. Dont change the landscape. Pack out what you pack in and dont drive off established roadsMost importantly, be respectful; you’re a visiting guest. To get a closer look (no closer than 100 ft minimum distance at all times) approach on foot. DO NOT APPROACH IN SIDE BY SIDES OR 4 WHEEL VEHICLES. You can frighten the horses and alter their habits. For this trip, we rented some extra camera gear to make sure we could get sharp footage without being too close to the horses. How to Hike Antelope Canyon for FREE! DogCatManVan 2023-06-18 | #lakepowell #kayaking #hiking #travel #Arizona #outthere #antelopecanyon #outdoors #dogs #vanlife #free #canyon As our last adventure in Arizona, Julie and I decided to check out the beautiful Instagram famous Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ, right on the edge of Lake Powell. We did some research and found out that you cant view the canyon on your own, but instead employ the services of a local tour guide to take you through one of two designated trails on either the lower or upper section of the canyon. And more importantly, dogs are not allowed. Given that the tour companies charge anywhere from $55 for a half mile hour long tour to almost $200 for a full day tour, in which you’re herded through the canyon like cattle with 20 other people breathing down your neck, we decided to figure out a better option. Well, a much more difficult and strenuous option to be honest, but one that turned our journey into another wild adventure fully equipped with kayaks, backpacking gear, and dogs. FULL DISCLOSURE: if you dont own your own form of water transportation, this wont be free for you!Come along with us as we struggle to stay afloat on the rough waters of Lake Powell, avoid a summer monsoon in a slot canyon, and camp overnight on the sandy beach. Ok maybe not, but at least it really looked like Mars. Or Tatooine. We actually went to the Bisti/De Na Zin Wilderness area in northwestern New Mexico; a hot spot for dinosaur fossils from the Cretaceous period (that’s a really really really long time ago. Like millions and millions of years ago). AND WE FOUND DINOSAUR BONES!!!!! Or DID we….???? You’ll actually have to watch to find out. But we did lick a lot of stuff, get caught in a desert sand storm, and bake in the New Mexican sun for at least 9 hours. A BIG thanks to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science for hosting us and talking with us about fossils and dinosaurs. They were SO welcoming and very knowledgeable!
