Max GoldbergGrowing up, trains were kind of my thing—I adored Thomas the Tank Engine and even celebrated my third birthday party at Union Station in New Haven, CT. I distinctly remember looking up at the departures board and watching the numbers and letters flip by, completely fascinated by the incoherent mess slowly revealing its message.
The "Solari" departures board in New Haven was taken down and replaced with a modern, LED display two years ago. When I saw the news last week that Philadelphia's 30th Street Station would also be removing their Solari, I felt obligated to capture on film the feeling I got looking up at that display as a kid.
Enjoy!

Yes, 007 like James Bond.
I found this system complete in case at Goodwill and I believe this is the first time the demo tape has ever been digitized! This is a very unique system that can act like a camcorder, action camera, portable VCR... You're really only limited by your imagination. It's like the Nintendo Switch of early 90s camcorders.
Want to use it as a Walkman? Easy! Strap it to your head and jump out of a plane? Go for it. Watch movies while sitting in the passenger seat of a convertible while driving down the beach? Not sure why you'd want to, but that's totally possible.
The fact that I have never heard of this until now and that the only information about it on the internet is old news articles from when it was released in 1990 tells me that this system did not sell particularly well. Maybe because it was $2,500. Adjusted for inflation, that's about $6,000. A typical camcorder back then was under $1,000.

When Daylight Savings time begins, you can turn the knob to advance the clock forward by one hour. When Daylight Savings time ends, you either have to cycle all the way forward by 23 hours, or simply unplug the clock for an hour.I turned a vintage Solari flap unit into the worlds most satisfying dice roller #satisfying #diyMax Goldberg2023-11-05 | ...Oops I bought an actual Solari flap unit 😬Max Goldberg2023-10-31 | ...Recreating the Mind Control Headphones from Josie and the Pussycats #3dprinting #diyMax Goldberg2023-07-07 | ...I 3D printed my friends house #3dprintingMax Goldberg2023-07-04 | ...Casio DG-20: It Came From The Future (VHS on CRT TV)Max Goldberg2023-02-03 | The next logical step... A bunch of years back, I made a video of the Casio DG-20 digital guitar. Then I put it on VHS and captured it digitally. Now I played the VHS on an old CRT TV and recorded that for a fully authentic retro look. Enjoy!

In 2016, it was announced that Amtrak would be replacing the iconic "Solari" split-flap display board at 30th Street Station with a modern, digital screen. I was pretty unhappy about that (and so were many people) so I rushed to 30th Street and filmed what I thought would be a short video highlighting the thing before it went away forever.
It wasn't until over two years later that the display was actually dismantled and the digital replacement wasn't completely installed until months after that. This video incorporates footage from the original 2016 video, as well as footage of the display being taken down in January 2019, and footage of how the digital display looks today.
This piece has been in the works for over 3 years!
Enjoy!

Greg was adopted at birth and grew up knowing very little about where he came from. This film, created by Max Goldberg and Greg Tilden, documents this life changing journey.
