In this short reflection, I examine leadership behavior, authoritarian dynamics, and what past moments of crisis reveal about human consciousness and social change.Over the last few days, I’ve been watching doctors, therapists, and clinicians who work closely with dementia patients discuss what they see as a rapid cognitive and psychological decline in Donald Trump. Some believe we may be only months away from a breaking point—either a constitutional crisis, an unprecedented act of recklessness, or something far worse.In this video, I reflect on the idea of malignant narcissism, a psychological concept that was explored in the aftermath of Hitler to explain how such extreme and aberrant personalities can exist—and why leaders with this personality structure often become most dangerous as they approach the limits of their power.I explore how figures like this can magnetize the darkest aspects of human psychology—drawing followers into increasingly regressive, authoritarian, and sociopathic behavior—and why they often cannot imagine a future that doesn’t include themselves.But this reflection doesn’t stop at fear.Historically, moments when humanity has stood at the brink—such as the Cuban Missile Crisis—have sometimes triggered unexpected transformations in consciousness. Much of what we associate with the counterculture, the psychedelic movement, and the cultural revolutions of the 1960s emerged directly from the terror of possible annihilation.In this talk, I ask a difficult but necessary question:Could the extremity of our current moment—however dangerous—also function as an evolutionary pressure?
