The 4051 is an 8-way analog switch with 3 binary selector inputs. By hooking up each input to a variable resistor (potentiometer or photoresistor or empty), various patterns of sounds can be made. The fun trick is to switch up the selector inputs to different clock inputs of the 4040 frequency divider, going beyond a simple 8-step pattern of sounds.
