From Bash scripts to AI agents, this video tells the forty-year history of infrastructure as code as a bedtime story — complete with a weary servant, a kingdom that never stops growing, and a parade of tinkers who each promise to fix everything. Traveling through CFEngine, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Terraform, Kubernetes, and Crossplane, the story traces how every generation of tooling solved a real problem, only for the kingdom to expand fast enough to swallow the improvement whole.
The real nightmare, it turns out, isn't failure — it's winning, over and over, and still being the one who gets woken up at three in the morning. As AI agents arrive and claim the part of the job that took decades to master, the video asks a quietly unsettling question: if the next generation of tooling no longer needs to be readable by a human, who exactly is it being built for — and who will still be holding the lantern when something breaks?
