Four pit bulls escaped from a collapsed backyard fence in Norfolk Sunday afternoon, chasing two adults, according to police.
A neighbor fired a gun as the dogs charged, seriously wounding one dog and killing another. The owner of the four dogs says seeing one of her dogs dead in the street was traumatic and maintains the escape was an accident.
Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi says dog owners can potentially face criminal liability if negligence results in someone being injured. He also says investigators will consider whether the person who fired the gun was legally justified in using deadly force.
The surviving dog has returned home to recover. No charges have been announced. Norfolk police say once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review.
