What happens when a planned 4-hour ham radio activation turns into a full 8+ hour field deployment? In this video, I take you behind the scenes of a real-world portable ham radio setup supporting a local Rotary Club event—where power management, connectivity, and adaptability all get put to the test.
Originally scheduled from 8am–12pm, the activation quickly expanded to 8am–5pm, forcing me to stretch a limited battery-powered ham radio system far beyond its intended runtime. To keep everything online, I deployed a 20W solar panel setup to supplement my battery and maintain continuous operation.
This setup wasn’t just about RF—it also included Starlink satellite internet paired with an APRS iGate, allowing APRS packets to be forwarded to the internet in real time.
