Classic Book and Retelling Discussion || The Great Gatsby and The Chosen and the Beautiful [CC] MoonyReadsByStarlight 2022-06-14 | I am Bek (they/them) and I read The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald and the retelling, The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo, back-to-back and these were my thoughts. This is not totally spoiler-free because I do talk about a lot of details, though I don't talk about the big event at the end of either book.In here, I discuss themes in The Great Gatsby (primarily themes of the American Dream and critique of the American Dream), racism and antisemetism in the book, and some thoughts on the characters of Nick and Gatsby (talking at length about why I think reading Nick as gay just makes sense). Then I discuss The Chosen and the Beautiful as how it responds to the themes and writing of the original text and some of the queer representation and insight on relationships (though I think it's worth noting that what I say in here about particular identities is specific to the characters.
