It's taken a while to get some of these races from last year setup and analyzed, so apologies for the loooong gap. But rest assured these will be coming regularly going forward!
That said, this race was all about the East Hawley Rd climb, and the rollers that came after it. I definitely have quite a bit to talk about and share with you from this race, so thanks for watching!
Big thanks to the Northampton Cycling Club for sponsoring this race as well. Definitely looking to doing it in 2023 and beyond! It's a definite keeper.

It's also the first race in which I am racing with my new team, Dave Jordan Racing! So stoked to be part of their crew.
So that being said, this one is going to be very *VERY* different from any other video I've put together, including commentary from other racers, tons of informational overlays, and raw footage followed by analysis. Timestamps are below to help you navigate the video.

Today's race analysis is much shorter than normal since I cut out about an hour of the race. I get into the "why" in the intro section :)
It also explains why for the first 16 minutes or so of the video I may sound a little "muted". It was a snorefest for most of the race, so I guess my commentary reflected that lol

22:22 end of my break attempt, and discussing a brilliantly timed counter attack
23:35 the beginnings of my frustration with the field. I was the ONLY one that got chased on the day
24:43 discussing my power profile and the first power test I did last November. Coggans 1min/5min/20min test
27:10 discussing selective courses vs non-selective courses
28:00 discussing change in tactics post power test from my coach
29:40 field lets yet another tiny break go, to my ever increasing chagrin lol
30:13 discussing the value of teammates in a field, particularly on a non-selective course
31:01 discussing joining a team, and how I can help a team, not just be helped by a team
31:39 shout out to @NorCalCycling, Jeff Linder. Learned a TON from his videos and team tactics with Terun and Mike's Bikes
32:06 the last of my teeth grinding at the field letting yet another small splinter break attempt go, lol
33:30 getting back to the discussion around @NorCalCycling and Mike's Bikes tactics, race team specialties
34:19 Announcing that I am looking for a team that needs a team-oriented break rider! :)
35:13 back to the end of the race, talking about my power profile again. Cat4 sprint, Cat1 1, 5, and 10min power lol. No points left to get, so I decide to just try a sprint
36:10 discussing the next race analysis video coming in a couple days after this. talking about how one of my friends reached out after I told him about this race and said he'd work for me in the next race, which happened to be race #9. That video will be dropping a couple of days after this one. My friend is a Cat3 :)
37:45 discussing other racing channels like @TheVCAdventures , @nationsnumber1beast, etc. finishing up with you able to see my god awful sprint, and why I don't rely on that at all. reminder that I'm looking to join a team :)Randalls Island Crit - Cat 4MGP Cycling2022-03-28 | Welcome again to another of my race analysis videos, this time on March 26th 2022 on Randall's Island. If you're enjoying these, please like/comment/subscribe!
1 - I said that this was my 6th race of the year. It's actually my 7th
2 - As a 40 minute crit I didn't slice and dice it into a 10-15 minute summary as I will in future longer circuit and road races
3 - I'm just coming out of an illness that kept me sidelined for nearly a week so this was a "shake the cobwebs out" race for me more than anything else. Lots of attacks, bridging, counterattacks, etc. All in all a good day even if I didn't get the results I was hoping for. If nothing else, race craft race craft race craft
4 - Links below are to the sponsors. Shout out primarily goes to Alex Kochatau for organizing this series as well as the World's Fair series in Corona Park. He's a treasure for the NYC cycling community, so many kudos to him and Verrazano Team Racing which can be found at facebook.com/VerrazanoTeamRacing
TIMESTAMPS 0:00 - Racing while coming back from an illness, discussing the CRCA Mengoni Race in Central Park the prior weekend
4:50 - Wind conditions and the impact on the race
5:50 - Difficulty of moving up in the field when lining up poorly at the start, the technical nature of the course, past experience at Randall's and getting 6th place while taking far better lines
9:20 - Following Veselka to move up and getting a better position with some energy expenditure. Gaining a very quick understanding that I wasn't dealing with a full tank of gas on the day, dealing with elevated HR, making up a bunch of wheels and then losing them again
11:30 - Losing ground on the field despite doing 600-750 watts in the technical corners. It's so critical to surf the top 10 at Randall's at all times
12:20 - Chris (Merrick Racing) making a great move to move up in the field successfully
14:00 - Discussing my general difficulties with crits, my power profile, etc. Mortal Kombat ref
15:30 - First break attempt goes off. More crit talks, my last result at Randall's, field placement and why I was more successful in getting 6th place, etc
18:00 - Not making any headway, field getting shredded and strung out in the rear cam. Commenting on the "dead legs" of another racer who had asked me if he had a flat tire lol
Following Andrew (FOHR) for a bit
19:50 - Value of a good line in the technical corner, and showing the HUGE difference it makes in required power output. This is basically the trick to being successful on this course. It can save you 100-300 watt spikes per lap
ps: Sorry for calling you "my tug" Andrew lol
21:15 - Unintentionally gapping the field, not realizing it, then preparing for the counter after noticing my HR was just not elastic on this day.
Counter came from Dan (Lonely Hearts)
23:40 - Making the mistake of taking the inside line and exposing myself to the wind, but in the moment it was trying to set myself up to potentially pair up with Dan (Lonely Hearts) for a break. Knowing your competition and how they ride to make on the fly plans
25:15 - Trying to get my HR under control, holding 450-550w sustained and still losing wheels. It definitely wasn't the plan going in
26:05 - Technical turn again, concern with a potential break, and it actually going. Dan (Lonely Hearts) and Ron (Merrick Racing) bridged up to the earlier 2 man break. Had sniffed it a lap earlier, but couldn't take advantage.
27:50 - Planning for 5th ensues, discussing the remaining 7pts for my Cat3 upgrade. More clean lines in the technical turn
29:40 - Chris (Merrick Racing) attacks again on the start/finish straightaway. We see him again in a few minutes
Expending energy to not lose contact with a bridge effort. MUST.. GET.. WHEEL.
31:06 - Setting up for a break attempt to secure 5th, still battling elevated and pegged HR, switching to the rear cam attack and watching Erkko (NYCC) blow right past me and secure 5th
Recognizing the race craft is there even if the top end fitness today or at Mengoni was not
ps: Sorry for butchering your name Erkko!
35:15 - Racing is becoming more mental than physical for me, and internalizing that you can't win every time, but taking the positives from it
35:45 - Mentally and physically exhausted. 314w avg for the final 20min at 172bpm is just insanely high HR for me, a good 10-15bpm higher than normal
Taking the race outcomes as preparation for returning to health for the next race.
Not sprinting for non-points position, etc
37:10 - Correcting butchering of Erkko's (NYCC) name, Andrew (FOHR) pedal strikes, closing thoughtsCRCA Club Race #1 - B Field (Cat 4)MGP Cycling2022-03-10 | Hey everyone! 00:00 - sponsors, race setup, central park and other race venues in NYC and NJ
06:25 - My coach Rick Sorensen @ VeloJawn, as well as the Green Mountain Stage Race in Vermont
07:00 - Discussing Harlem Hill and breakaway Strategy in races
08:30 - 2022 Race calendar, wind conditions of central park, fatigue coming into the race, etc
11:55 - riding in a pack (race or otherwise), how to stay safe, especially at high speeds
13:45 - wind conditions, staying hidden and sheltered to save my "energy budget". Shoutout to other cycling channels like @NorCalCycling and @TheVCAdventures
15:00 - Horseshoe, riding in a pack and racing defensively and proactively
16:18 - Cat's Paw, overall game plan coming into the race
18:00 - Guggenheim and Engineer's Gate landmark, strategy around getting to the primary downhill just before Harlem Hill as quickly as possible, reading the race in real time, understanding dynamics based on field observation
20:47 - My first Breakaway attempt, "escape velocity", camera change to rear as the primary field of view. Tactics for a successful break vs mistakes that were made that doomed this one.
25:45 - counterattacking a break attempt, energy conservation, more about the GMSR Day 3 where I met Coach Rick Sorensen and Jerome Jacobs of VeloJawn, etc
34:10 - More on race tactics going into the pre-Harlem Hill downhill, being on the lookout for attacks, covering attacks with minimal energy, trying to identify potential break opportunities
39:15 - Recognizing some teams in the field:
Foundation Dave Jordan Major Taylor Development Team Lonely Hearts Cycling NYCC Good Guys Veselka
Discussing locations of attacks being as important as strength of attack, more covering of attacks and conserving energy, etc. More discussions of recognizing successful breaks vs not
41:35 - Discussing an attack that went off by Lonely Hearts racer Dan, and talking about my conversation with one of their teammates, Phil. General commentary about riding the front and watching the break try to form, recognizing whether it'll be successful, energy preservation, etc
45:30 - Cat's Paw again, real time thoughts about the field dynamics in this section of the course in this particular race and formulating the bones of a strategy
48:30 - pack riding, maintaining energy reserves as much as possible, being able to use the saved energy for directed moves going into the pre-harlem hill downhill, etc
50:40 - Marking potential attack on Harlem Hill with low energy expenditure, reading the race, using energy with a purpose in racing, and the downsides of not conserving. Lessons learned from Coach Rick!
52:35 - Reading the race, understanding where an attack may be coming from and when, but why attacking at one part of the course may not be a good idea vs another. Why I chose to respond, or not, etc. More anecdotes about the GMSR breakaway and utter devastation and feeling of loss, even to this day
56:30 - Chasing Teammates!!!!
Don't. Do. It!!! :)
01:00:10 - More Cat's Paw discussion, spidey sense starting to tingle about potential strategies in this race
01:04:20 - Reading the race about the field's punchiness, or lack thereof, going into harlem hill. Field getting tired, recognizing it, "escape velocity", playing that into my own real-time "strategery"
01:07:30 - Anticipating counterattack, recognizing the viability of the break attempt immediately, etc
01:10:30 - moving through the field with a purpose, maintaining an understanding of the race, why people are doing what they're doing, etc. Patience is a virtue in racing, something Coach Rick beats into my brain constantly
01:12:39 - Prepping for my second breakaway attack heading into Cat's Paw. Sounding off on what was going through my mind while running on fumes on this 3rd race in two days
01:14:15 - Switching perspectives of the rear and front camera. You know what's coming, ATTACK!!! Final race thoughts, comments on remaining energy reserves, and watching the winning break just before the gopros run out of juiceDangerous Ending to Branchbrook Park Spring Series Race - Bloomfield Tour - Cat 4/5MGP Cycling2022-03-07 | This is my first time doing some race analysis.
