DESERT RAIN was born a while ago, inspired by the idea of fusing Celtic melodies with Oriental sounds. The music came easy to me, but I had trouble coming up with a fitting title for this all-instrumental song. Those who follow me on Twitter will remember that some time ago I posted a snippet asking the community for their ideas. Some great thoughts were shared and eventually led me down the right path where all of a sudden everything made sense. If you combine Celtic with Oriental, rain meets sand, broadly speaking. Hence, DESERT RAIN!The next challenge was finding a fitting location to film this music video. Living in Germany, I have access to neither a desert nor a landscape that fits the Celtic rock vibe of this song. I thought about solving this with my usual green screen trickery, but then in the summer of 2023 I decided to travel to Scotland and take my guitar in case a good opportunity came up to shoot this - and it did! Back in the 90s I used to get up in the middle of the night to watch Michael Jordan and the Bulls on TV, so The Last Dance had a very nostalgic effect on me. Especially at the end of EP1, when SIRIUS started playing for the Chicago Bulls intro / starting lineup celebration, all the memories came flooding back! I immediately stopped watching and rushed into my studio to record my own version of the iconic theme song!SIRIUS was originally released as the instrumental intro song on the album Eye in the Sky by The Alan Parsons Project. It was adopted by the Chicago Bulls as their theme song that played during the starting lineup player introductions and became a worldwide phenomenon, frequently being played at all kinds of sports events.The original SIRIUS is quite short, so it is often edited to create extended versions, like it was done for The Last Dance soundtrack. Since I re-recorded all parts for this guitar cover, I made my own extended version by arranging it with a slower buildup to the guitar solo. I also extended the solo by composing a new second half based on the original.Do you like the Sonic movies? Paramount+ just launched the Knuckles spinoff mini series and I'm thrilled to say that they used my version of SIRIUS for Wade's bowling tournament finale! The beautiful melody of the Evangelion opening theme song made it a great candidate to be transformed into an electric guitar cover version, so here it is! Apparently, the anime's creator Hideaki Anno wanted to use a more classical piece at first, which would have been more in line with the anime's darker tone, but viewers were more used to this type of upbeat opening theme, so they went with it. It proved to be a very good choice and gave us one of the most iconic anime openings in history!► About this A Cruel Angel's Thesis Guitar Cover:Creating this Evangelion OP guitar cover was on my to-do list forever! With the recent launch of Neon Genesis Evangelion on Netflix, I thought this was the perfect time to get it done. The original Evangelion opening features an iconic vocal performance by Yoko Takahashi. A lot of A Cruel Angel's Thesis Covers naturally feature great performances from all kinds of singers, but I wanted to try something different and do a full instrumental guitar cover version of the theme. Well, one second of eternity has passed since my previous Doctor Who video (see link below), where I asked all of you what soundtrack I should cover next. Doctor Who's "The Shepherd's Boy" aka "Breaking the Wall" from "Heaven Sent" was clearly the most requested track. The visuals for this cover were so time-consuming to make that I started to feel like that bird from the Shepherd's Boy story, chiseling away a mountain of diamond. Or, you know, like the 12th Doctor punching his way through a wall of Azbantium. This time there are just two references, but they are much better hidden. I expect the first one to be discovered soon, but the second one will be a challenge! Can you spot them both? Let me see your theories in the comments!► Making of the "Shepherd's Boy" coverAs I was arranging the music for this cover, I realized two important things:1. "The Shepherd's Boy" works like one big long crescendo. This fits the "Heaven Sent" story perfectly and is an integral part of the music, that the cover should replicate.2. The melody was clearly written for and really shines on bowed string instruments.Thankfully, I recently started working with the amazing violinist Sarah Bergé, who was happy to join this project. She gave a beautiful performance, both in front of the microphone and the camera!Apart from Sarah, Stefanie J. returns once again as the solo vocalist, leading us into the middle section with her haunting singing. Last but not least, soprano Jana Marie Gropp helps to push the finale into "epic" territory!► About "The Shepherd's Boy":Doctor Who "Heaven Sent", the penultimate episode of Series 9, is regarded as one of the show's best. Peter Capaldi's performance as the 12th Doctor was fantastic (absolutely fantastic) and during the episode's climactic "Breaking the Wall" montage, Doctor Who's long-time composer Murray Gold introduced a breathtaking piece of soundtrack that would quickly turn into a new fan-favourite: "The Shepherd's Boy" - also known under the title "Breaking the Wall", for obvious reasons.Murray Gold had already laid the foundation for the "Shepherd's Boy" theme in a Doctor Who episode that aired two years before "Heaven Sent" and interestingly, it was in that very episode that we got our first glimpse of Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor. Back then, the soundtrack titled "This Time There's Three of Us (The Majestic Tale)" introduced the melody that would later return for the "Breaking the Wall" sequence. But it wasn't until those final moments in "Heaven Sent" that this melody finally got the spotlight it deserved in the form of the fully developed "Shepherd's Boy" theme.For the remainder of Peter Capaldi's run as the 12th Doctor, "Breaking the Wall" became sort of a more emotional alternative to the actual 12th Doctor theme "A Good Man?". It was so popular that a reprised version of "The Shepherd's Boy" was even used for Peter Capaldi's final moments in Doctor Who, accompanying the 12th Doctor's regeneration scene. Sonic Screwdriver Scene | 13th Doctor | Doctor Who (Guitar Cover) Borna Matosic 2018-10-10 | 13th Doctor theme guitar version! This is the 13th Doctor Jodie Whittaker's theme from Doctor Who Season 11, composed by Segun Akinola!This is a made-from-scratch faithful recreation of Segun Akinola's soundtrack for the 13th Doctor Jodie Whittaker's sonic screwdriver scene, but with electric guitar on the melody. This scene was the first time the 13th Doctor theme music was used in the show!The first episode of series 11 Doctor Who, The Woman Who Fell to Earth, did not only give us a first real look at Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor (spoiler: she's brilliant!), but we also got brand new Doctor Who music and a few scenes where the shows new composer Segun Akinola introduced the 13th Doctor theme music!I particularly enjoyed the version of the theme that plays while Jodie Whittaker's character is crafting the sonic screw driver. For this Doctor Who guitar cover, I rewatched that scene over and over and then reproduced the music from scratch, staying mostly faithful to Akinola's original arrangement, except for giving the melody to the guitar.The 13th Doctor quotes I used in the video:"When people need help, I never refuse!""I know exactly who I am. I'm the Doctor! Sorting out fair-play throughout the universe!""Tadaaa! THE DIVE by Borna Matosic (Instrumental) Borna Matosic 2013-11-10 | THE DIVE is an instrumental rock song that tells the tale of a free diver's descent into the deep blue sea, inspired by Luc Besson's 1988 movie Le Grand Bleu.Amp feedback sounds great, but is hard to control. I discovered a new device that makes great sounding guitar feedback easy and recorded a song with it: THE DIVE!We all know the amazing guitar effects that can be created with amp feedback, but to pull them off, we need to turn up our amp to eleven. And even then we need to stand in exactly the right distance and angle to the amp and maybe, if the stars align, the amp will spit out the right kind of feedback we had hoped for.It's because of this unpredictability and difficulty to control amp feedback that guitar fx enthusiasts have sought for alternative feedback methods since the dawn of mankind when the first cavemen discovered that the right feedback note at the right time could blow the heads off of their most dangerous nemesis, the dinosaurs! What, you never heard that story? What did you believe led to the dinosaurs' extinction and the rise of mankind? Nope, no meteorite could have had that power, it was amp feedback! But I digress...So, alternatives to amp feedback were sought that could provide the sweet sustain and feedback sounds while being easier to control for the guitarist. And our prayers were answered: We got the amazing Fernandes Sustainer and E-Bow! Both great inventions that are much easier to control than amp feedback while producing that same endless sustain and singing feedback overtones. But unfortunately, both the Fernandes and the E-Bow come at a cost.The Fernandes Sustainer needs to be installed in one of your guitars and uses up one of its pickup spots. Choose the Fernandes and you lose a pickup, and if you want to turn your other guitars into feedback monsters, too, you'll have to sacrifice more pickups and buy more sustainers.The E-Bow on the other hand uses exactly that: your other hand. It's a very portable, lightweight device that requires no installation and works with all your guitars, but you'll have to hold the E-Bow over your guitar's strings with your picking hand whenever you want to use its sustain and feedback magic. This means it's not exactly practical to switch back and forth between using the E-Bow and normal picking in a song.So, what to do? Personally, for years I used the E-Bow while fantasizing about maybe equipping one of my guitars with the Fernandes Sustainer, until one fateful day, I discovered something new. Something very clever. Something utterly unknown to the wider population of guitar-playing caveman-descendants. Unknown despite being used by legendary guitar virtuoso Uli Jon Roth and a few other initiated souls!But fear not, I've come to spill the beans! May the knowledge spread throughout the world that there is a new alternative to amp feedback, invented by the German one-man company Vibesware. It's a sustainer called Guitar Resonator GR-1! Metal Liquified A.D. (Earthbound Papas Metal Hypnotized Remix) Borna Matosic 2012-02-14 | This is the "After Deadline" version of the "Metal Hypnotized" remix that I made previously for the Earthbound Papas contest! I call it Metal Liquified A.D.!I created this one just for fun because I really liked my arrangement of the song and wanted to make a video for it. Apart from that, I took the chance to improve the mix, rerecord a few of the guitar leads with a new sound and add a bit of Ebow action to the middle of the song. And I replaced the improvised intro guitar solo from the previous version with a new one, which rocks much harder! ;-)The original Earthbound Papas song is entitled Metal Hypnotized and was released on the band's debut album Octave Theory.
