Remember, a can of soda at 180mph can cause a decapitation, so buckle up kids!

I started attending AGDQ in 2015 as a fun way to connect with other speedrunners. I always appreciated that it was a charity event, but back then I didn't think about the work we were doing as much as the fun we were having.
In 2019 I lost my dad to lung cancer. It was *during* AGDQ 2019 and I was still in the event hotel when I got the news. That year, the work we were doing became extremely personal. And I was so grateful to have a place to be where I felt like speedrunners like me made a positive difference in peoples lives.
I had thought that that was the end of my personal story about cancer. It wasn't. Three months ago I got my own diagnosis. One surgery later they say I'm cancer free again, and here we are.
Happy AGDQ 2022. The work we do for charity every year has never meant more to me. And when we can finally do AGDQ again in person, I'm still going to be here... hopefully even with a run or two.
Much love and thanks to everyone who supported me through my father's cancer, and my own.

Echoing my AGDQ 2019 donation, many many thanks to the Prevent Cancer Foundation for all the work they do in the world as well as the staff of GDQ for turning speedrunning into such a positive outlet.
Thank you to iggyzig for the warm thoughts and for reading the message. And for twitch chat for absolutely crushing it with hearts (and BibleThumps).
Of all the things, I never thought Twitch chat would make me cry.
Beginner Race - Bronze Framerule, sad to have lost 0.5s vs. GLOD here
Intermediate Race - Silver Framerule, pretty clean
Aerial Race - Silver Framerule, early hammers clean, pause to avoid wands
Silly Race - nice climb and clean 1-bounce silly skip, really happy about this!
Ultimate Race - Fast framerule (2 framerule / 0.5s time save) and then a frame perfect LeKukie 0-cycle! Only thing that wasn't optimal was taking the final corner a little bit slow, but it wasn't gonna be 2:40 either way so I'm glad I brought it home safely.
Intermediate Race - Silver frame rule, I'll take it. Clean here.
Aerial Race - Silver frame rule, early hammers. Occasionally I'm glod here. Pause to avoid wands.
Silly Race - One bounce but jerky birds slowed us down. Gets 2 framerules ahead of PB.
Ultimate Race - Slow framerule ultimate loses 2 framerules, all the time comes back to the LeKukie 0-cycle and this one was super clean.
Not the run. But a good run on the way to the 2:40.
Also I put my 2 minute PB up cause it's pretty good and I'm apparently a shitty state machine.
Link is michaelaranda.itch.io/tminus before I lose it again.
Instead of chasing after "Early Hammers" (aka: 4, 5), the stupid pausing seems to put hammers on a "free" cycle (1,2). This turns out to be hard to reproduce, and we are still studying it. I just happened to PB very hard the first time I was testing it.
Other highlights include perfect 1-bounce Silly Skip, "fast" frame rule Ultimate race, and only 1-frame off of the frame-perfect LeKukie skip. It's a good run and 2:41 or better is coming real real soon!
And push it into Silly Race.
As my Marble Bro. says, "Never PB by too much."
Must have just barely missed fast Ultimate cycle.
If I don't mind saying so I think I did a gorgeous job threading the needle with the birds.
Swag death. I learned it from you, Yels.
The background here is that I have had a vague memory of getting 6000 points offstream for the last few years. I've never been able to reproduce it, even with TAS tools, and I've been starting to feel like I am Todd Rodgers about the whole thing.
All that changed when I was doofing around on a dead run and for real, on video, landed the 6000 point jump.
Kept the pop off for funzies.
It seems...exactly like Marble Madness but harder to see. I don't know why it was made. This was my first complete playthrough and I accidentally did a really good speedrun.
I want to call it 2:48.216 but that doesn't super matter.
(Sound is behind, don't really know why.)
Practice Race - almost GLOD
Beginner Race - Minor spaghetti on the final screen
Intermediate Race - Bad spot early for a -5 I didn't want, but we got the hot drop!
Aerial - Wasted such a good crack by cracking... the other one.
Silly - Dat wand, finally.
Ultimate - Kinda derpy but red had the time to burn on getting dragged around.
He wouldn't do it in a real run...
Would heeee?
Nailed ice block jump but took a death in 4-1. Definitely improvable in other areas as well.
This includes several ridiculous IL strats (I'm looking at you 3-4 / 9-2 / 9-5) that you would never* try to do in a real speedrun.
Nonetheless, as I write this I don't think any 2.86s have been recorded on video, and now they really really have.
It is hard because:
1. Henry (the rat) must be dropped in such a way that he walks to the left on a specific pixel, while the player dashes to the right.
2. Getting Toragos (the bone snake) to turn up rather than down requires that the player be higher than him on the frame that he makes the decision. Doing this requires a "super boost jump" which is a frame perfect input.
3. If both of those things are successful, the player must then to a perfect ice block jump, which is an extremely difficult (single pixel / frame?) jump off of the falling ice block.
Then all you have to do is get the keys quickly and not die on the way out.
I think the keys to getting the 2.00 are dashing on the first frame that you can into the gap (getting level with it as soon as is possible), and then again when you touch the ground lined up with the door.
(Video speeds adjusted ever so slightly so that they are the same run time.)
Yelsraek sent over his Race 13 footage to make this complete composition of all 5 runners possible.

PhaseWorm might initially look like a game that you've seen before. The first few stages will introduce you to movement mechanics that seem straightforward. Next, we'll introduce Phasing. Phasing allows you to match the color of the environmental tiles in order to pass through them. The addition of the one-time passthrough concrete (or grey) tiles adds the additional challenging of carefully planning your path through the grid.
Story mode will take you through an increasingly difficult and complex set of 30 themed levels, each with a unique layout. PhaseWorm incorporates a medal system to track your best times on each level. Getting more advanced medals requires more frequent and precise phases. Getting the platinum times on many of these levels will prove to be very challenging.
Apples have been carefully placed to challenge the player to build their skills. Let's look at the end of "The Desert Oasis". If you're going for the silver medal, you might phase to yellow and go around the center. If you're pushing for the gold, you can try to go through the grey tiles and phase green while inside them. If you want that platinum medal though, you're going to have to Phase perfectly from yellow to green, then quickly to blue and back to green.
Clearing the later stages is really tough, and aquiring the medals for these stages is a big achievement that will push the envelope for elite players.
---
The game's look and feel can be somewhat customized. Gridlines can be turned off or set to any opacity, and the player can choose to use our themed tileset or switch back to basic colors.
We've also included a phase prediction prompt to help you as you progress through the game, and this element can be turned off as well.
---
PhaseWorm is now available in early access. While the core gameplay for story mode is complete, feedback and statistics from the community will help calibrate medal times and a smoother progression in level difficulty.
Future plans for PhaseWorm include more original soundtracks for the stages, a more polished UI, and alternative options for tilesets. We also want to add controller support, with the Phase colors conveniently matching the Xbox controller buttons.
---
We hope you enjoy PhaseWorm, and encourage you to replay the levels as you improve your skill, or even try speedrunning the entire game!
I cleaned up the version from my twitch highlight and edited out the couple of times I paused the game.
New Times:
Matthew the Gangster - 0:41
Enoch Varg - 1:05
Mother Superior - 1:12
Master - 1:28
Head Guard Furius - 1:41
Exorcist Showdown - 1:53
Laurentis IV - 1:34
Lilith - 1:43
Hazelnym on keyboard.
This run also happened to get us a high score world record.
Since I was the only runner not featured on the stream, I was able to pull my local footage and create a complete race view. All videos are now perfectly synchronized so you can see how close this thing really was!
(Accidental early split at the end, it's actually 27 seconds.)
This is the best one so far.

It's a great game for speedrunning, this video shows the final level and time on the machine.

Probably spent about 6 hours on this and had a real problem getting consistency with checkpoint 9. Nerves got the better of me and I almost botched checkpoint 10 real bad.
