Focus (Fastcharge) is an A-level skill with varying effects depending on the weapon being used. On some weapons, it allows the hunter to charge his or her weapon at increased speeds, the weapons that receive this effect are: Great Sword, Hammer, and Bow. On certain weapons, it allows the hunter to fill their gauge at a faster rate, that is, each individual hit will fill up more of the gauge than without the skill, the following weapons recieve this effect: Dual Blades and Long Sword. Lastly, Focus also restores the Switch Axe gauge at a faster rate allowing for quicker reloads.
This video will be comparing the effects of Focus on the Great Sword, Hammer, and Bow. The skill is highly debated among players; some insist on having it, while others choose to allocate their points elsewhere. Whatever side of the fence you sit on, hopefully this video can help affirm your position.
For comparisons sake, I have included footage from Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. The charge time is the exactly the same from both games, but if you were unsure, hopefully this clarifies that. The top portion of the screen, during the 4-screen split, is footage from Monster Hunter 4G, while the bottom portion is footage from Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. The left side is footage without Focus active and the right side is footage with it active.
