The Turtle from 3DMakerPro is a modular, markerless 3D scanner with a 6.4-inch AMOLED touchscreen and three swappable camera modules for scanning small, medium and large objects. I used it to scan my portable air conditioner so I could design a dual-hose adapter to improve its efficiency.
The camera modules snap on magnetically in seconds, either onto the battery base or the optional wireless control pad. The battery base provides a wired connection to your PC, but the control pad is the real star of the show. Being completely untethered makes scanning large or awkward objects like this much easier.
The Turtle uses structured blue light, so I didn't need to cover the air conditioner in tracking markers. I used the medium camera module, which made very quick work of capturing the rear inlet vents—I completed the scan in under five minutes.
I then processed the scan directly on the control pad. The large touchscreen makes this quick and easy before transferring the scan wirelessly to my PC. After importing the mesh into Autodesk Fusion, I used mesh section sketches to design a custom adapter that precisely matched the complex, organic curved shape of the air conditioner's rear panel and incorporated a 6-inch hose connection.
